India‘s white-ball series Down Under was one with mixed emotions for the visitors. While “specialist batsman” Hardik Pandya and find of the year T Natarajan shined brightly. Sanju Samson and Shreyas Iyer failed to grab the opportunities that came their way. While Samson finished the T20I series with only 48 runs under his belt. On the other hand, Iyer has only 71 runs to his name in the five games he played across formats.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra feels that their “disappointing” performance Down Under calls for changes in the side. Chopra feels that Manish Pandey, who played only a single game in the tour, has his place in jeopardy. And these recent developments might pave way for Surya Kumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan into the side. The duo was instrumental in Mumbai Indians‘ title run in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020.

Samson got a chance, but he could not make use of that. Shreyas Iyer is also going 50-50, his Australian tour has not been that great, in fact, I will call it a slightly disappointing tour. So if we see from that point of view and Manish Pandey’s place is also not fully cemented,” Chopra said on his youtube channel.

They might even get to play against England

Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav

There was a huge uproar in the cricketing fraternity following Suryakumar’s snub for the tour of Australia despite being in top form in the IPL. After the results India endured Down Under in the limited-overs series, Chopra feels some changes are likely to be made in the team. And it could benefit the likes of Surya and Ishan.

So both Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan are knocking the doors, and considering the number of our players that are getting injured, I feel they might even get to play against England. I don’t think both of them are too far, but if they have another good IPL, which they had in IPL 2020, and if even the 2021 edition goes good, then you will definitely see them play international cricket,” Chopra said.

Suryakumar has been one of the consistent performers in the IPL lately. And a home series against England might be the perfect time to give him his maiden India call-up. On the other hand, Kishan has been a dependable and flexible batsman for MI. And his firepower might be a handy addition to assist the likes of Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja low down the order.
