After an eventful first day of the day and night warm-up games, the Indian top-order batsmen have finally found their “hands” Down Under. Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill struck half-centuries as the visitors extended their lead over the 200 run mark. After a brisk start in the first innings, Prithvi Shaw yet again succumbed at a low score. But the duo of Agarwal and Gill made sure the hole in the ship is well and truly plugged.

In pursuit of his maiden Test cap, Gill put up a display of scintillating batting as he amassed 65 off just 78 balls. An innings studded with 10 boundaries saw the Punjab batsman play some lavish shots. And Indian domestic stalwart Wasim Jaffer is in awe of the youngster’s batting. Jaffer took to Twitter to laud Gill for his exceptional innings which might have pushed him past Shaw in the pecking order.

Straight bat, high elbow, head still, getting on top of the bounce, @RealShubmanGill ticking the technical boxes and in some style too,” tweeted Jaffer.

Following up his heroics with the bat, Bumrah chipped in with two wickets as India closed the first day in the driver’s seat. Captain Alex Carey top-scored for his side as Marcus Harris ramped up 26. Harris was rewarded with a Test call up following the day’s play as Will Pucovski was ruled out of the opening Test.
