Rap icon Drake has always had close affiliations with the NBA and the athletes, and it wasn’t anything fresh for the fans. However, he recently turned heads for the muse he made from his interactions, even name-dropping Cade Cunningham. While the lyrics spread like wildfire, the rapper had no intentions of retracting from his musical choices.
Suffice it to say, Drake caused a ruckus on the internet with his NSFW lyric leak involving the NBA star. Since that wasn’t enough, the rapper doubled it down with his recent post. Taking to IG, he posted a picture of himself in Cade Cunningham’s locker.
Under the Pistons star’s banner, Drake hung around using his phone in a Sanctuary Basketball League jersey. Reportedly, the picture was taken a couple of years ago when he was in Detroit, allegedly providing some truth to his statements. The fans were also quick to note the ‘God’s Plan’ rapper’s crocs that were heavily referred to in his controversial lyrics.
Only a couple of days ago, Cade Cunningham joined the list of people that inspired Drake to name-drop in his music. While none made this much noise, this was from a leaked track, “Shopping Spree”. This time around, it piqued more curiosity because of the unforeseenness.
Despite the expletive lyrics, Drake’s association with the NBA remains unquestioned. He was often spotted partying with players and engaging with them during games. He was a regular at the Raptors matches and had plenty of viral moments on the court.
Cade Cunningham’s mention also drew a significant amount of attention to the Pistons star. That said, the budding elite was already starting to make waves in the NBA with his skills. This song only testified to his glory. For his fourth season of the league, he averaged 25.9 points per game. The Pistons had also improved with a 43-36 in comparison to the last season.
Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and more name-dropped by Drake
Cade Cunningham might be the latest player to made an appearance in Drake’s music but he wasn’t the first. The rapper has a long history of being an admirer of the NBA and he has been extemely public about it.
His extravagant knowledge was reflected in his song “0 to 100” where he gave a nod to Stephen Curry‘s prowess in the game way before he got the Warriors their first ring. He also shared a close-knit relationship with the iconic hopper, having shouted him out several times.

Drake also compared himself to LeBron James and lauded him for his longevity in the game in the hit track “Nonstop”. One of his latest name drops was Kevin Durant in the song “No Face”. Supposedly, this track was one of those the rapper released in a rap beef with fellow artist Kendrick Lamar. The two-time NBA champion was also one of Drake’s close circles. Apart from them, he has also referenced Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Vince Carter, and other elite names from the league.
Notably, Drake wasn’t the only rapper or musical artist to take inspiration from the NBA. The fusion between hip hop and basketball was longstanding. Travis Scott, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar were only some of the artists who catered to the audience with their favorite players. However, none have been as consistent as Drake. With his latest track featuring Cade Cunningham, the fans speculate his upcoming music might have more surprising elements.
