It has been a while since Tom Brady departed from the New England Patriots. Since then, the team has struggled to find stability in the quarterback position. However, there is a lot of excitement and optimism amongst fans this week as the team’s first-round pick, Drake Maye gets his first NFL start.
There is perhaps nobody more excited than Patriots owner Robert Kraft to see how Drake Maye fares. Despite being down big to the Houston Texans in the Week 6 game, Kraft was all smiles after Drake Maye threw his first career touchdown pass.
The pass came late in the second quarter with under 12 seconds left. Maye threw a 40-yard pass to Kayshon Boutte to put the Patriots on the scoring board.
The play had Robert Kraft all excited as he stood up and could be seen clapping and giving high five to those sitting beside him in his booth at Gillette Stadium.

Drake Maye has 1 interception in his first game as a starter in the NFL
Through three quarters, Maye has 106 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. It is not as good compared to C.J. Stroud, who has three touchdowns and one interception, but considering the uncertainty that New England has been subjected to at the QB position, today’s game marks a special moment for the organization and the fanbase.
The Patriots are on the verge of having yet another disappointing season. The team is 1-4 through 5 weeks. Head coach Jerod Mayo stuck with veteran Jacoby Brissett through the first few games as he did not want to send in the rookie to the line of fire without being prepared. However, Brissett struggled because of the team’s offensive line and was able to accumulate 696 yards passing two touchdowns, and one interception.
As the New England Patriots continue to be in a rebuild, the team’s decision to start rookie Drake Maye is a positive step. The real struggle has been for the O-line to ward off defenses to allow the quarterback to get an opportunity to throw the ball. Drake Maye was selected third overall by the Patriots earlier this year after the team was impressed by his performance at North Carolina.
