Despite spending the third overall pick on Drake Maye, the New England Patriots went in an entirely different direction by starting with Jacoby Brissett. However, the season doesn’t seem to be going too well for them, as they dropped to a 1-3 following Sunday’s loss.

After being outperformed by the San Francisco 49ers at 30-13, the Patriots recorded their third consecutive season loss. Completing the game with 19 of 32 passes for 168 yards, one touchdown, and two turnovers, Brissett gave his worst performance of the season in week 4.

Yet, head coach Jerod Mayo is sticking with Brissett as the starter over the rookie star Maye. While addressing the media on Monday, Mayo explained the reason why he is picking Brissett as the starter “at this time.”

I would say from my perspective, he [Drake Maye] did outperform Jacoby [Brissett] by the time we get to the end of camp. What we had to do is go into the regular season knowing, who gives us the best chance to win right now. And so just because you’re trending better in a certain way, doesn’t mean you outperformed [the other QB] from a wholistic standpoint — talking about the spring all the way through training camp.

Meanwhile, Mayo is keeping the rookie Maye as the backup to Brissett is a safe decision, believing he would be able to step in if the starter sustained any injury. But he refused to illustrate further his plans for Maye.

Jacoby Brissett faces uphill battle amid Patriots’ offense struggles

Even though Brissett deserves appreciation for remaining in the pocket and taking numerous hits, the offense is facing a considerable challenge this season. The quarterback was sacked six times and hit 10 times in the loss against the Niners, while the 49ers applied 53.8 percent of pressure on the Patriots dropbacks, marking the highest rate allowed so far.

It’s a big opportunity for Brissett to establish his name in the league and thus, he has to improve. The Patriots need to strategize its passing attack to be threatening, given it is ranked at the bottom with 112.3 passing yards per game, in the league.

Although the Patriots are moving forward with Brissett at the moment, they could change their strategy later in the season, as head coach Mayo has assured fans that he is making the decisions that are in the best interests of the team.
