Draymond Green dethrones Tim Hardaway for the third most assists ever in Warriors’ history
Draymond Green and Tim Hardaway
On Christmas, the Golden State Warriors hosted the Memphis Grizzlies at the Chase Center in San Francisco, California. The depleted Warriors squad consisted of Draymond Green, Jordan Poole, and Klay Thompson, to name a few. Without their anchor player, Steph Curry, very little was expected of them. What everyone expected to be a lopsided match in favor of the Grizzlies instead turned out to be a bitter defeat for the Memphis-based team.
The Golden State Warriors were obviously trying to let the Memphis Grizzlies know something. and they made their point very plain by winning decisively, 122–109, at Chase Center. Strong start to the Warriors’ eight-game homestand as they attempt to maintain their status sans Stephen Curry. While the victory may be sweet, there’s one player who made history.
Draymond Green after his 13 assists and 13 rebounds this game has overtaken former Warriors player Tim Hardaway for the 3rd most assists in franchise history. Over six seasons and 422 games for the Warriors, Hardaway racked up 3,926 assists. Only Guy Rodgers (4,855 assists) and his teammate Steph Curry(5,565 assists) are still in front of Green (3937).
Despite his modest production, he is perhaps the team’s finest passer and defender. He had averages of 8.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 6.6 assists in 29 games going into Sunday’s game against the Grizzlies. Green was not expected to start the game, had that happened, the Warriors may have been obliterated.
Draymond Green’s valiant efforts against the grizzlies
While Draymond Green may only have contributed a bleak 3 points in the warriors’ 122 points, his tough defense, continuous assists, and tactful rebounding turned out to be a nightmare for the grizzlies. The grizzlies who were favorites to win the game were no match for the Warriors’ tight defense led by Green.
The Warriors have had the former second-round selection for the whole of his career, and he has assisted them in six of the last eight NBA Finals appearances, they have won four NBA Championships in that span.
The Warriors’ scoring efforts were led by Jordan Poole. With 32 points, Poole led the way before being dismissed for a second technical foul midway through the fourth quarter. When Golden State increased their advantage with a 40-point outburst in the third quarter, Klay Thompson added 23 points and really got things rolling.
With Jaren Jackson Jr. and Desmond Bane starting for the Grizzlies, who were at full strength, Ja Morant set the tone, but his 32 points weren’t enough. The Warriors reminded the Grizzlies that they are still the champions.
