Former Golden State Warriors player Klay Thompson returned to the Bay Area this 2024-25 NBA season for the first time as an opponent. Thompson left the Warriors for the Dallas Mavericks in July during the offseason after the two failed to agree on contract terms.

Thompson returned with the Mavs at the Chase Center to play against the Warriors in the NBA Cup match. Although he was welcomed with love and respect by the Warriors fanbase as well as players, the game proved to be a heated one for Thompson, especially between his former teammates Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.

Notably, on his podcast with former NBA player Baron Davis, Green made an intriguing revelation regarding Thompson and Curry.

Steph(Curry) was supposed to speak before the game. He was like ‘Yeah I called Raymond and told him I’m not speaking. I just need to lock-in on the game so I ain’t even speaking, and I talked to Klay about it. He tried to check in with Klay on something else and Klay ghosted him. And he got pissed! And here we go! Here we go! Locked in!

As Thompson concentrated on starting a new life in Dallas, Green, and Curry anticipated that he could become distant during the season. His homecoming to the Bay Area didn’t go well, as the resilient Warriors prevailed thanks to a solo 12-point run by Curry in the final two minutes, giving his team the victory.

Towards the end of the game, Curry scored 12 consecutive points to snatch away the victory from the Mavs, who had a five-point lead late in the fourth quarter. The Warriors star finished with 37 points (14-27 FG), six rebounds, and nine assists. Averaging 11 points (3-6 FG), Green also had seven rebounds, six assists, three steals, and two blocks.

Draymond Green opens up on “keeping in touch” with Klay Thompson

In the Golden State Warriors’ 120-117 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday, Draymond Green faced Klay Thompson for the first time in NBA history. Green delivered a fantastic response when asked if he had stayed in contact with Thompson after his departure after the game.

You ever tried to keep it in touch with Klay? It’s a very one-sided thing. The love is there, the relationship is there. I’ll get back in touch after the season — we’ll both be in LA. I’m not adding more gray hairs to myself just trying to chase Klay down.

Thompson recorded 22 points, four rebounds, and three assists in 34 minutes in his debut game as a visiting player at Chase Center. The Mavericks are now 5-6 in the 2024–25 season. Thompson shot 7–17 from the field and 6–12 from beyond the arc, but it was insufficient to secure the victory.
