Draymond Green reveals his son was ‘about to cry’ on hearing about Klay Thompson’s departure
The departure of Klay Thompson marks the end of the Warriors' “Splash Bros.”

Draymond Green and Klay Thompson
Draymond Green has shared his thoughts on Klay Thompson’s departure from the Golden State Warriors, with whom he won four NBA championships. Green revealed on his podcast, “The Draymond Green Show”, that his son DJ was saddened by the news and asked why the Warriors couldn’t have Luka Doncic instead.
Thompson’s exit from the Warriors came after contract negotiations reached a stalemate. He ultimately signed a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

I was like, ‘Oh by the way, Klay not gon be on our team no more’. And he’s like ‘What?’. I’m like, ‘He’s going to Dallas with Luka’. And he’s like, ‘Why can’t we get Luka?!’. I’m like, ‘It don’t work that way, I need to teach you about the salary cap. Luka make way too much money for us to get Luka’. And he was just like, sitting there sad.Draymond Green narrated the conversation with his son DJ
Green’s comments come after Steph Curry posted an emotional thank you message to Thompson on Instagram. The departure of Thompson marks the end of the Warriors’ “Splash Bros” era, which included Green, Curry, and Thompson.
The move has significant implications for the team and the NBA, as Thompson joins a new roster in Dallas. A roster that now has the dangerous trio of Doncic, Uncle Drew, and now Thompson.
Draymond Green reveals he almost left Warriors for Grizzlies last summer
Draymond Green also revealed what he might have done last summer. He revealed that he considered leaving the Warriors last summer, as he told his teammates and management that he was planning to sign with the Memphis Grizzlies.
However, Green ultimately stayed with the Warriors, signing a four-year, $100 million deal. He credited the team’s ownership and management, including Joe Lacob and Mike Dunleavy, with helping to keep him in Golden State.
So last year during free agency, I called Klay and I called Steph, separate calls, and Steve (Kerr) and I was just telling them like, 'Yo I'm leaving. I'm going to Memphis.' I remember that call with them so I was going to leave... Obviously, we got it figured out. Shout out to Lacob and Mike Dunleavy, his first free agency. We got it done.Draymond Green said on his show
Green finished the 2022-2023 season with solid averages of 8.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.0 assists per game. Sadly, the Warriors missed the playoffs after losing to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament.
