Draymond Green teared up on Klay Thompson leaving Warriors
Klay Thompson has signed with the Dallas Mavericks.
Draymond Green teared up as Klay Thompson told him he is leaving Golden State Warriors for Dallas Mavericks
Draymond Green, for his entire NBA career, was playing alongside Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson. Together, the Golden State Warriors trio won 4 NBA titles to create a dynasty. Therefore, to see one of his long-time teammates leave to continue his basketball journey elsewhere was a tough pill to swallow.
The most impactful news emanating from free agency was the departure of Klay Thompson. His now former partner in crime took to his podcast, The Draymond Green Show, to talk about how he felt when Thompson broke the news.
I don't really know how I feel about it. Klay told us last week. When Klay told me, I was just able to listen. And it wasn't like a 'Yo, we could finish like this' or 'You should rethink this.' It was just like 'Wow, alright, congrats bro, like I'm happy for you.' To reassure, that changes nothing for us. Changes the basketball court obviously. But the relationships, they are what they are, they are forever. I might have dropped a tear or two.Draymond Green on The Draymond Green Show
Green understood that Thompson was leaving. Therefore, he did not try to stop him or try to change his mind. Draymond Green knows that Klay Thompson has a lot of pride. That is considering he has been a superstar throughout his basketball career. He wanted to be a starter and contribute to another NBA title attempt. But the Warriors had other plans.
Klay Thompson was a 5-time All-Star. Then injuries robbed two good playing years. After all this, he had a shooting slump last season which eventually led to his benching. That was the final straw which pushed him out of the door.
Klay Thompson to face Draymond Green and Warriors at least 4 times
Had Klay Thompson moved to a team in the Eastern Conference, in most cases he would not have faced his former teammates more than twice. But since he has joined the Dallas Mavericks, it makes the situation a bit unpleasant. Being in the same conference means that Thompson will go head-to-head with his former teammates 4 times.
Therefore, 4 regular season games are the minimum number of times they will battle. If the playoffs are brought into the picture, then the number will go up. The Dallas Mavericks are strengthening their team to get another shot at the NBA title. On the other hand, the Golden State Warriors are adding a lot of pieces for the same ultimate goal.
If Klay Thompson ends up battling against Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in the Western Conference Finals, it will be fireworks for sure. He will certainly want to prove his previous team wrong.
