Dustin Poirier is one of the best lightweight MMA fighters. Even though he was an interim champion, he was unsuccessful in becoming an undisputed champion in two attempts. Moreover, he also lost the BMF title fight to Justin Gaethje at UFC 291 via brutal head-kick KO.
In his recent appearance on Theo Von‘s podcast, This Past Weekend, the duo talked about a hilarious story after Poirier lost to Gaethje. Von, a fellow Louisianian, is a close friend of Poirier and has access to the fighter’s locker room. As such, he saw what happened after Poirier lost to Gaethje.
I remember sitting in your [Dustin Poirier] green room after [loss to Justin Gaethje] we were all sitting in there, and literally, it felt like we were at a funeral in a weird way, but you were right there.Dustin Poirier via This Past Weekend podcast
Poirier went into the fight as a favorite, and nobody thought Gaethje would knock him out cold, let alone via a head kick. Nonetheless, Porier fondly remembered the vibe of his dressing room after the loss, which he now felt hilarious.
I said, 'This ain't a funeral.' You [Theo Von] put on a black suit and stuff, still here. I don't even know where you got it. Somebody stood up and was like, 'He was a good man.' I'm like, 'I'm right here, bro. I'm right here.'Dustin Poirier via This Past Weekend podcast
It is one of the most unusual locker room stories from the UFC. Theo Von also alluded that the one who stood up was Saba Homasi, an ex-UFC fighter and friend of Poirier. Moreover, the comedian even insinuated that Homasi even tried to flirt with Poirer’s wife, Jolie.
Dustin Poirier tells how loss against Justin Gaethje switched his mindset
Dustin Poirier’s loss to Justin Gaethje came as a blessing in disguise for the Diamond. Poirier rebounded with a finish over Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299, while Gaethje lost the BMF title to Max Holloway at UFC 300. Moreover, Arman Tsarukyan, the number one contender, refused to fight Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 with a quick turnaround.
This situation forced the UFC to book Dustin Poirier in a title fight with Makhachev. Poirier is grateful for the experience he had after he lost to Gaethje at UFC 291. He spoke in-depth about it in his appearance on the This Past Weekend podcast, as the loss played a pivotal part in his comeback as it switched his mindset.
When he was winning, Poirier revealed he felt complacency, but after he lost to Gaethje, he had a sense of self-realization. For Poirier, it needed to happen. It certainly did help him as he knocked out Benoit Saint-Denis viciously at UFC 299 in his next fight.
Even though Gaethje knocked him out, the two are respectful, and Gaethje’s joyful reaction went viral when Poirier won at UFC 299. Nevertheless, Gaethje met with a similar fate he delivered when he stood and banged against Max Holloway at UFC 300. It remains to be seen if a third fight between is on the cards.
