Dwight Howard keeps beef alive by using ‘r-word’ to diss Shaquille O’Neal
Dwight Howard dissed Shaquille O'Neal with some questionable comments, continuing the mud slinging between the two big men.
Dwight Howard disses Shaquille O'Neal amid continued beef
The long-standing feud between Dwight Howard and Shaquille O’Neal reached another low point this week when Howard used a derogatory term to take a jab at the Hall of Famer. During an Instagram Live session, Howard mocked O’Neal while addressing fans’ questions about his potential return to the Los Angeles Lakers, signaling his growing frustration with his current NBA prospects.
Dwight Howard’s remarks came amid speculation about the Lakers’ center position following their trade for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton. Some, like former Laker Robert Horry, had floated the idea of Howard returning in a limited role. However, D12 dismissed any notion of joining the Lakers, instead ridiculing both the franchise’s history and Shaquille O’Neal in particular.
"When am I going to the Lakers? I'm not… Y'all got 3 centers. Hell, y'all got Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar]. I think Shaq said he's coming back with his retarded ass… Y'all will be good after that."

The jab was more than just a joke, it was laced with sarcasm and frustration as Howard implied the Lakers would rather rely on retired legends like O’Neal and Abdul-Jabbar than give him another shot. While Howard has expressed interest in returning to the NBA, recent developments suggest he’s not in the mix for any major team, including the Lakers.
This situation might have triggered Howard’s outburst. Trade speculation around potential Lakers targets like Walker Kessler, Robert Williams, and Jonas Valanciunas made it clear that Dwight Howard’s name wasn’t even being considered. And of course, Howard would never miss out on an opportunity to diss Shaq.
Shaquille O’Neal recently discarded Dwight Howard’s Championship
Shaquille O’Neal, meanwhile, hasn’t shied away from taking shots at Howard. In a recent episode of The Big Podcast with Shaq, O’Neal dismissed Dwight Howard’s role in the 2019-20 Lakers’ championship, referring to him as a ‘bus rider’ while heaping praise on JaVale McGee, another role player on that title-winning team.
When guest O’Shea Jackson brought up McGee, O’Neal was quick to show respect.
The Big Diesel’s comments definitely have a hint of pettiness behind them. Both McGee and Howard played complementary roles on that Lakers team, yet O’Neal’s selective respect for McGee seems inconsistent. Statistically, Dwight Howard had a slightly greater impact on the Lakers’ championship run.
In the 2019-20 regular season, Howard averaged 7.5 points and 7.3 rebounds per game, compared to McGee’s 6.6 points and 5.7 rebounds. Howard’s playoff contributions, although reduced, still outpaced McGee’s output. For Shaq to diminish Howard’s role while praising McGee feels more like a continuation of their personal feud than an objective analysis of their contributions.
