Having won five tour titles, 23 year-old Russian Andrey Rublev has managed to do what nobody could, in a year paralyzed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Sitting on a career high ranking of No.8, the Russian even made his debut in the ATP Finals tour in London after announcing himself into the Top 8 with his stunning run of titles.

Despite bowing out of the Finals in London at the group stages, Rublev had a year from which he had a lot of positives to take away. Coincidentally, 20 time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer had picked Andrey Rublev in a chat with Tennis TV, as the player to look out for at the start of the year suggesting that the Russian ‘will do something special’ this year. And true to the Federer’s words, 2020 has been truly ‘special’ for Rublev.

Federer’s ‘nice’ words felt ‘unrealistic’ for Rublev

The Russian recently revealed in a chat with sport24.ru, how it felt on knowing that the Swiss legend had predicted him to have a breakthrough year in his career. Rublev described the feeling to be more as ‘unrealistic‘ than prophetic. “It’s incredibly nice when a legend like Federer says things like that. Then I realized it was a little unrealistic. There were many younger guys who stood in front of me,” Rublev said.

On a stage that is overflowing with ambitious young players, Andrey Rublev achieved to rise to a level and get recognized for his potential. Speaking of his potential, the young Russian is aware of the competition surrounding him that wishes to climb the ladder onto greatness for which he hopes to improve strength to strength before heading strong into the next season aiming for the prestigious Grand Slams.
