Eddie Hearn did not bid for Devin Haney‘s fight against Sandor Martin. This has resulted in Devin Haney being forced to defend his title for a fraction of his last fight purse against Ryan Garcia. The Matchroom chairman recently made a statement explaining the reason for backing out of the purse bidding.

Ariel Helwani recently came out with a tweet on X. In that tweet, he revealed Eddie Hearn‘s statement regarding not bidding for the Devin Haney vs. Sandor Martin later this year.

We don’t have a contract with Devin. It’s not an appealing fight, wasn’t a fight DAZN were motivated by or one that had any value. Devin is a free agent and has his own promotional company.

Interestingly, it was the Matchroom chairman himself who had advised Haney to defend his WBC super-lightweight title against Sandor Martin. The initial move for Haney after the loss to Ryan Garcia was to unify the belt against Subriel Matias. However, Eddie Hearn reportedly said that he did not believe it was the right fight for Haney coming off a defeat.

Bob Arum‘s Top Rank submitted a bid for $2,420,000 at the hearing. WBC will hold 10 percent amounting to a total of $242,000 in escrow as a win bonus. The remaining amount of $2,178,000 will be split between Haney and Martin 70-30. ‘The Dream’ will walk away with a total of $1,524,600 as the defending titlist while Martin gets $653,400 as the mandatory challenger.

The American boxer is definitely upset with how things turned out for his upcoming title defense. In light of recent events, he sent out a series of tweets reacting to Matchroom’s disinterest in the bid. He also expressed interest in taking time off of boxing after he is done with Martin.

Haney recently sent out a tweet on X. There he revealed how he plans to take time off of boxing and return in two years for a rematch with Ryan Garica.

I'mma take some time.. spend some of my money.. travel the world & I’ll be back in two years after Ryan's suspension & we can fight again.

Haney’s fight with Garcia ended in a majority loss for the champion. However, since King Ry missed weight at the weigh-ins, Haney kept his WBC title. Nonetheless, it was later discovered that Garcia was on banned substances, and as per the latest developments, he will face a two-year suspension by the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC).
