Oleksandr Usyk became the first undisputed champion in heavyweight boxing with a split-decision victory at Reign of Fire against Tyson Fury. One person cage side with a close eye on the fight was Anthony Joshua, who was 0-2 against Usyk. Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, recently had nice things to say about Usyk.
Hearn was a recent guest on A True Geordie podcast hosted by Brian Davis. As expected, boxing was the podcast’s topic, especially as Hearn has a 5 vs. 5 fight card against Frank Warren. On the podcast, Hearn sang high praise for the current undisputed heavyweight champion, Ukraine’s Oleksandr “The Cat” Usyk.
He tires you out with his feet. His movement is mesmerizing, his work rate is unbelievable. Part of it is like you're thinking, 'I need to be… I got 12 rounds of this.'Eddie Hearn via A True Geordie
Nonetheless, Hearn also stated that Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua had hurt Usyk in their fights. Moreover, he also noted that Usyk was susceptible to body punches. As such, he felt someone would likely defeat Usyk in boxing if he had not retired. Brian Davis pondered whether pressure was the answer to counter Usyk.
Hearn agreed but also stated that Usyk has punished overly aggressive opponents. He cited Joshua’s fights with Usyk as examples to make his case. Turki Alalshikh recently announced the date for Fury vs Usyk II, which will likely give the answers to Hearn’s assessment.
Eddie Hearn speaks on his rivalry with Frank Warren
Matchroom Boxing and Queensberry Promotions have been at odds since time immemorial. Matchroom founder Barry Hearn and Queensberry founder Frank Warren started the rivalry which is still going on despite the retirement of Barry Hearn.
Warren is still in the business with his sons, George and Francis. On the other hand, Barry’s son, Eddie Hearn, has been following his father’s legacy. Turki Alalshikh recently mediated a truce between Eddie Hearn and Warren, and they have a 5 vs. 5 card in action on Saudi Arabia, just hours away. Hearn recently spoke about the rivalry on A True Geordie podcast.
This rivalry goes back 40 years, right through the family, not just when I came into boxing. My childhood was really, you know, understanding and hearing about Frank Warren this, Frank Warren that, Frank Warren said this.Eddie Hearn via A True Geordie
Hearn cited Warren’s style of playing the game as pressuring his opponents with lawsuit after lawsuit. However, Hearn praised Warren for his resiliency, particularly continuing after being shot. Nonetheless, Hearn’s father still does not have an amicable relationship with Warren.
