Ryan Garcia was surely the underdog against Devin Haney, even though he is a bigger star in terms of fan following. Furthermore, his antics caused several doubts to be cast on him and his performance. However, KingRy delivered one of the best performances of his professional career. Subsequently, he secured a huge payday from the fight and reportedly placed a bet on himself. Unsurprisingly, Matchroom Boxing Chairman, Eddie Hearn does not believe this is true.
With many people questioning him because of his social media posts, it wasn’t expected that Garcia would win. However, KingRy managed to knock down Haney three times in their fight and won via a majority decision. After the fight, he confirmed on Instagram that he placed a $2 million bet on himself and won $12 million. Hearn dismissed this notion in an interview with ‘BoxNation’ and stated:
Well, I'm not sure whether that's true, but it's a good story.Eddie Hearn via BoxNation
The promoter feels that KingRy’s claim of placing a bet on himself and cashing out $12 million is not true, because betting on oneself although legal in boxing, still is heavily regulated. This is because fighters can compromise a fight to win a certain bet.
Hearn also stated that it makes a good story, which suggested that it might be part of Garcia’s antics. However, Garcia has maintained that he will be receiving a $50 million plus payout from the fight and the $12 million winnings from his bet.
Eddie Hearn talks about the fight
Hearn was confident that Haney would emerge victorious ahead of the April 20 fight. However, the pound-for-pound undefeated boxer was completely given a beating of a lifetime. Surprisingly, Hearn thought the fight was close and was even hoping for it to be a draw.

The promoter gave props to Ryan Garcia for his performance but maintained that Haney showed a lot of heart. He also believes that KingRy’s caught Haney off guard in the first round, but The Dream maintained his composure across most rounds. Furthermore, Hearn stated:
When the final bell went, I knew Devin Haney hadn't won the fight. I thought, could we squeeze a draw here?Eddie Hearn via BoxNation
Hearn reflected on how one of the judge’s scorecards reflected how close the fight was. However, he believes that the knockdowns led to Devin Haney losing in the end. The promoter also believes that if Haney had not gone down after the first knockdown, it would have been a draw. A sentiment any promoter would have for his fighter. If the tables were turned and Garcia had been knocked down thrice while giving the same performance as Haney, would Eddie Hearn feel the same way? Probably not.
