(Video) El Grande Americano Costs Penta His First-Ever WWE PLE Singles Match at Backlash
Penta's ambitions to become the WWE Intercontinental Champion were dashed by El Grande Americano's uncalled interference at Backlash.

After taking the WWE Universe by storm initially, things haven’t gone Penta‘s way as of late. On Saturday night in St. Louis, the former AEW star went one-on-one with Dominik Mysterio for the Intercontinental Championship. How could it have gone untouched by The Judgment Day? The trio of Carlito, JD McDonagh, and Finn Balor appeared at ringside to assist Mysterio.
Balor, not so surprisingly, took way too much time to act when McDonagh had Penta grounded. The Irishman then thought of bringing a steel chair, which eventually became the cause of the trio’s ejection from ringside. Even Michael Cole questioned Balor’s delayed tactics on commentary. But once the Judgment Day was ordered by the referee to head backstage, it seemed as if Penta had an opening.

Just when the 40-year-old was perched on the top rope trying to outmaneuver Mysterio, El Grande Americano appeared out of nowhere and head-butted Penta. Americano, whom Cole often accuses of being no one but Chad Gable under the disguise of a luchadore mask, took advantage of the referee being distracted by Finn Balor. The latter knew his job was done and retreated.
In the meantime, Dirty Dom delivered a frog splash on an already banged-up Penta to retain his IC belt. It was Rey Mysterio‘s son’s second pinfall victory on him over the span of less than a month. The Greatest Luchador in the World put away the Cero Miedo-saying wrestler on Raw after WrestleMania 41 as well. Mysterio won the title at The Showcase of the Immortals, pinning his own stablemate Balor in a match that also had Penta and then-champ Bron Breakker involved.
Penta might be done with Dominik Mysterio for the time being
After succumbing to yet another loss to Dominik Mysterio, Penta might divert his attention to someone who cost him at Backlash – El Grande Americano. Meanwhile, Mysterio already has AJ Styles next in line. The Phenomenal One confronted the 28-year-old and his crew in their clubhouse on last week’s Raw. Styles even fumbled a couple of words here and there, which prompted a brutal response by the reigning IC Champion on social media.

But before Styles gets his hands on Mysterio, the former WWE Champion will have to lock horns with someone he goes back in time—Finn Balor. They’ll collide on Raw this Monday. Speaking of when Styles could actually get a crack at the Intercontinental Championship, it could happen as soon as Saturday Night’s Main Event, slated for May 24.
Otherwise, the next probable destination for The Phenomenal One’s quest to capture the mid-card belt might not come to fruition before the Money in the Bank PLE on June 7. Styles is already a Grand Slam Champion in WWE, having won every title he technically could. However, his veteran instincts could test a cocky braggadocio in Dirty Dom when they meet in the ring.
Dominik Mysterio gets his stamp of approval from Liv Morgan after Backlash win
Even while on her brief vacation from WWE to film in Japan, Liv Morgan wasted little time in reaffirming what Dominik Mysterio is – the greatest IC Champ of all time, as she wrote on X. The 30-year-old will be off WWE television for at least one more week.

As per a report from Fightful Select, Mysterio’s on-screen girlfriend is expected to land back in the US on May 17. Which means she would be available to return on the subsequent episode of Raw. Morgan is still one-half of the reigning women’s tag team champions alongside Raquel Rodriguez.
They’re expected to resume their dominance once the former Riott Squad makes it back to the WWE programming. It’d be interesting to see how the WWE Universe treats Morgan during her matches upon her comeback from the sets of Bad Lieutenant: Tokyo.
