The most improved player in the WTA this season, Elena Rybakina has caused the biggest upset in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix after beating current World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in the semifinals.
The Kazakhstani player was unstoppable against World No. 1 Swiatek. She began the match pretty well, showing immense grit and determination, winning the first set 6-3 in just 49 minutes.
Swiatek came strong in the second set, showing very few chinks in her service game, but that was not enough threat to Rybakina. Despite losing the second set 4-6, the 24-year-old responded well in the third set to win the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
The victory over Swiatek was Rybakina’s 25th win of the season. For Swiatek, it meant she would not be going home with another Porsche car this year, having already won two consecutively. However, with Rybakina heading into the final as the favorite to win the tie, she may not be able to ride the Porsche car as she is without a driver’s license.
Well guys I actually don’t have a drivers license.Elena Rybakina said when asked about driving a new Porsche car.
Notably, the World No. 4 even ended Swiatek’s 10-match unbeaten run in the Stuttgart Open. She will now face Marta Kostyuk in the finals, having defeated Czech Marketa Vondrousova in the semifinals.
Elena Rybakina becomes the first player to defeat Iga Swiatek on a clay court in SF
Following Elena Rybakina’s win against Iga Swiatek in Stuttgart, she now becomes the first WTA player to get to five finals in the first four months of the season since Victoria Azarenka in 2012. The milestone also saw her become the first player to beat Swiatek in a clay-surface semifinal.
With 25 wins and four losses this season, Rybakina is the leading women’s player with the highest number of wins. Although she withdrawn from the Dubai Tennis Championship and Indian Wells Masters due to illness, she has won two titles this season.
The World No. 4 has only exited either in the semifinals or as the runners-up of every tournament this year, except the Australian Open, where she lost to Anna Blinkova.
With that being said, she earned her revenge against Swiatek after losing to her in the final of the Qatar Open in February. She also has seven wins against No. 1 since January 2023.
