Jannik Sinner has joined forces with Emma Navarro for this year’s US Open mixed doubles. But before teaming up, they had never talked to each other, and this cracked Sinner up when he talked about Navarro during a press conference.
Navarro has been pulling his legs for his game at the net, playfully taking a dig at him for the way he had played at the net during his Wimbledon final against Carlos Alcaraz. While Sinner is recharging his batteries, Navarro is gearing up for the Citi Open. In the pre-tournament press conference, the American ace joked that she had already told him to take complete responsibility during their matches.
Yeah, I’m excited to play. I think I’ll try to make him hit all the shots, and I’ll stand over in the alley and, you know, cover whatever, however many feet that is over in the alley. Yeah, we might get the job done that way (smiling). But, no, I’m excited. I think he’s an incredible player, of course, and I think we’ll have fun together. I’m excited.
Sinner has never played doubles matches in Grand Slam events. But Navarro has, in every Major, though she has never played mixed doubles. When asked in the press conference how she reacted after finding out that she would be playing against the World No.1, Navarro joked that she ended up crying.
I fell on the ground, was crying (smiling). Yes, banging my fists on the table. Yeah, huge reaction.
Emma Navarro added
Navarro is scheduled to lock horns with Maria Sakkari in her opening-round match. The second seed is searching for her career’s third title as well as this season’s second title after she lifted the Merida Open by beating Emiliana Arango.
In the Grand Slam tournaments this season, Navarro produced her best when she reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. At the French Open and Wimbledon, she lost in the first and fourth rounds, respectively.
Carlos Alcaraz sends ranking warning to Jannik Sinner
It’s a golden opportunity for Carlos Alcaraz to dethrone Jannik Sinner from the top of the rankings table. After the Paris Olympics last year (which Alcaraz lost to Novak Djokovic in the final). Alcaraz failed to make deep runs in the two tournaments he had played in the States.

At the Cincinnati Masters, he fell in three sets in his opening round against Gael Monfils. Then at the US Open, the five-time Grand Slam champion lost in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp.
I know Sinner doesn’t care about having many points to defend; he’s a great fighter who always plays to win and doesn’t let that influence him. But I’m ready for the challenge. My first goal right now is to regain the top spot in the rankings.
Carlos Alcaraz told La Gazzetta dello Sport
Sinner increased his lead after winning Wimbledon. He stands on top of the table with 12,030 points, while Alcaraz has 8,600. In the Wimbledon final, Sinner secured the win over his arch-rival after five consecutive defeats. In the overall head-to-head record, Sinner trails 5-8.
They hold a 1-1 win-loss record in the Grand Slam finals. Before Wimbledon, Alcaraz defended his French Open title with a five-set victory over Sinner. Sinner and Alcaraz have lifted two and five titles this season, respectively.
Both Sinner and Alcaraz have pulled out of the Canadian Masters. They will kick-start their campaign on the North American hard-court swing at the Cincinnati Masters. Sinner lifted this title last year by beating Frances Tiafoe. He then doubled his Grand Slam tally by beating Taylor Fritz in the US Open final.
