Uruguayan forward Darwin Nunez was seen consoling his young son on the pitch, after a heated altercation with drunk fans in the stands. A brawl erupted between Colombian and Uruguayan supporters after the Copa America semi-final clash.

The two South American sides met for a place in the final, at the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina. Colombia emerged victorious thanks to a brilliant goal by Jefferson Lerma in the 39th minute. However, the post-match headlines were dominated by ugly scenes in the stands, where a brawl broke out after the final whistle. A small group of drunk fans seated behind the team dugouts engaged in a violent altercation.

With the Uruguayan players’ families in the stands, forward Darwin Nunez and a few other players and staff members also got involved in the altercation by climbing into the stands to confront Colombian fans. Punches were thrown, including one that landed on the Liverpool star. He managed to get his family to safety but was visibly shaken and was seen comforting his son on the pitch. Other Uruguayan players and staff members were also assaulted.

Additionally, Uruguayan captain Jose Maria Gimenez criticized the stadium authorities and security for their failures. He described the situation as a ‘disaster’ and said that players had to protect their families, blaming intoxicated fans for the violence.

Liverpool‘s Darwin Nunez might face a lengthy suspension due to a post-match clash with rival fans. Police restored order after more than 10 minutes, with a group of Uruguayan fans and team staff staying on the field.

The 25-year-old forward could also be investigated for the incident. The South American football association, CONMEBOL, is investigating the incident while condemning all forms of violence. They reiterated their dedication to promoting football as a unifying force with positive values.

The ex-Benfica forward could be looking at a three-match suspension and a hefty fine for his part in the altercation. Liverpool fans frequently describe Nunez as a ‘mad player.’
