After DiJonai Carrington fouled Sophie Cunningham, the discourse was initially pinned on the Chicago Sky star for her ‘White privilege’ comment. But Indiana Fever head coach Stephanie White was caught in the crossfire.

That was because fans felt that the 49-year-old was defending Carrington, a player she coached when she was with the Connecticut Sun, rather than calling out the hard foul that left her current player bleeding from the mouth.

Those fans felt that this was another instance of White not defending her players, as she should have sided with Cunningham rather than explain why a rival player committed the foul.

This harks back to the times when fans also felt that the coach was not supporting Caitlin Clark enough, or when they felt that her schemes were undermining the superstar guard’s abilities. But this rhetoric surrounding Carrington tipped her over the edge.

This isn’t necessarily for those people that are in this room; this is more for an online community that’s trying to create narratives that simply don’t exist… Our players’ success, our players’ health and wellness, our players’ safety is always a top priority for me. One of the things I pride myself on is my relationships with players.

The Illinois native had her response printed out, but most of her words were pure emotion. Stephanie White was holding back tears while calling out those on social media who claimed that she did not have her players’ backs, reiterating that how she is with them is not something for them to judge.

After opening her statement with the vitriol that was going around on the internet, Stephanie White went on to explain why she said what she said about DiJonai Carrington.

I didn’t see the play in real time. I went straight to a press conference. I thought the play got called right. Thankfully, Sophie is OK. Was it egregious? Absolutely. When you have a chance to watch that over and over and over on replay, you can see that. I didn’t have that in real time.

White continued

The mother of two was probably suggesting that those sitting at home had the luxury of viewing the play multiple times and from various angles to get a clear understanding of what happened.

White, on the other hand, did not have that luxury. Despite not knowing the full extent of the incident, she had to reply to questions based on whatever she remembered that took place in the first quarter of the game.

Stephanie White finishes off by addressing social media trolls

Stephanie White was banging the table, and her voice was becoming louder by this point. But she used those emotions to finish the press conference with a statement to social media trolls.

I take personally any suggestions that I don’t 100 percent always have my players’ backs. I ride 10 toes down all the time. All the time! They know that… The hate, the fear-mongering, the divisiveness, the stuff that’s trying to hijack our league will not win… Love will win! Grace will win! Humility will win! And kindness will win!… Everybody else can go to hell.

The 2023 WNBA Coach of the Year made it clear that she backs her players no matter what they are going through, or how bad the season is panning out to be.

White also noted that outside noise is working hard to divide the league based on political and other agendas. However, she and her players are not going to be disturbed by it. Collectively, she believes they will win this war against the trolls.
