England find themselves in the final of yet another European Championship as The Three Lions left it to the end against the Netherlands. 2-1 read the final score as Gareth Southagte‘s men danced their way to back-to-back finals at the Euros. Despite the celebrations and relief, a group of supporters felt that the win was undeserved and an injustice to Dutch players.
In a fiercely contested game, Ronald Koeman‘s men took the lead in the seventh minute through Xavi Simons. The 21-year-old let fly from the edge of the box as his blistering strike eluded Jordan Pickford‘s reach. However, England bit their way back into the game from a penalty, expertly put to bed by none other than Harry Kane.
While many argued that the decision was a fifty-fifty call, others were convinced that the Netherlands were robbed in daylight. VAR replays show that Kane had his foot blocked by Denzel Dumfries as he attempted to block Kane’s shot from close range.
After initially awarding a goal kick, a lengthy VAR check managed to convince the match official to reverse his decision. England went on to win the game after ‘super sub’ Ollie Watkins scored a late goal in the 90th minute to break Dutch hearts.
Fans react to England’s controversial penalty against the Netherlands
Despite having an underwhelming tournament, England find themselves on the verge of redemption after coming from behind to defeat the Netherlands in a closely contested semi-final. As Harry Kane expertly finished off his penalty to drag his side back into the game, fans claimed that the Netherlands were robbed of a clear win. A fan said that the match official conveniently ignored a handball by Bukayo Saka in the build-up to the penalty call.
Many were confused as to what actually made the match official reverse his on-field decision. The fact that Dumfries only did his job in that situation was bewildering to a group of supporters. Instantly, rival fans raised allegations that the referee was paid off and that the game was rigged in favor for England to win.
Kane, acting as if he broke his foot, then scoring a penalty with that same foot three minutes later from a penalty that was overruled with no clear and obvious error, sums up everything that's wrong with modern football! #EURO2024 #england #LFC

Certain English fans even apologized to Dutch supporters for claiming a wrongly awarded penalty against them. Fans urged that the match official running inside instantly after full-time was revealing of what actually happened throughout the game. Following the win, England will take on Spain for a shot at glory at Olympiastadion Berlin on the 14th of July.
