Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has made it clear that English left-back, Ben Chilwell, can leave the club ahead of the transfer window shutting later this month. With just over an hour of football under Maresca in the pre-season window, Chilwell wasn’t extremely happy about the development.

Being an unused substitute against Inter in the last weekend where the Blues drew against the Italian stalwarts, the speculations fueled further. Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League opener against defending champions, Manchester City, the former Leicester City gaffer has clarified that Chilwell can start looking for suitors in the transfer market.

This morning we had 22 players training and if you ask all of them they will say they want to play against City on Sunday. But that is impossible. When you train every day and do not get any minutes it is not good for them or for me. I need to make a decision and probably it is better to leave and go and get minutes. The transfer window is open so we’ll see what happens.

Enzo Maresca further added that Ben Chilwell is with the squad but wasn’t a part of the practice because he was sick. Chilwell was well aware of the fact that he didn’t a chance in the playing XI against Inter because he couldn’t find the right position for himself. He has been a part of the Blues since 2020, joining them for a fee around the £50 million-mark and has made 70 appearances, from which he has fired home eight goals.

What’s next for Chelsea?

Chelsea will be kickstarting their Premier League campaign with a clash against Manchester City slated to be played tomorrow. They had a mixed-bag pre-season that saw them drawing with Wrexham while getting hammered against Celtic in the following fixture.

In a shambolic display for their defence, it was Christopher Nkunku who scored from the spot in the 89th minute to salvage some pride.

They did manage to register a victory against Club America only to follow that with mortifying defeats against Manchester City and Real Madrid. Chelsea had a very ordinary season in 2023-24 where they finished in the sixth position with 18 wins, 9 draws and 11 losses, while amassing 63 points.
