Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) got off to a good start in the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they notched up a 10-run victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The win was set up by a superb performance from the top order batsmen. Nitish Rana and Shubman Gill got KKR off to a good start as they raced to a fifty partnership before the latter lost his wicket.

The former then took over and along with Rahul Tripathi, got to a 93-run stand to put KKR on top. Both batsmen got half-centuries before some good hitting by Dinesh Karthik at the death took the score to 187. In the chase, Jonny Bairstow and Manish Pandey got fifties for SRH but ultimately the Orange Army fell short by 10 runs.

Eoin Morgan spoke at the post-match presentation about KKR’s start to the season and said, “Delighted. Build up to the tournament has been pretty good. The camp that we had pre-tournament, the guys gelled well. Never quite sure what performance they will produce. Today was quite magnificent the way the guys batted. Nitish and Tripathi were absolutely outstanding and set up the game for our middle order to play in the manner we want to play. We couldn’t have asked for a better start.”

Speaking about the back room staff, he said, “Chopped and changed a bit in the powerplay. Wouldn’t say that. Huge amount of structure that goes into the decisions on the field. Have got a fantastic head coach in McCullum. Great back room staff. Main job is to get the best out of the squad. IPL is all about the results.”

Meanwhile, Man of the Match Nitish Rana spoke shortly about his knock and said, “I thought the ball was in my slot so I went for it and luckily got four off my first ball. In my mind there’s only one thing: play my shots if the ball is there. Just backed myself. Have played a lot of spin growing up.”

KKR will face the Mumbai Indians next on the 13th of April.
