The Frenchman is joining boss Quique Setien in getting the blame for Bayern Munich’s devastating 8-2 loss that saw the club collapse out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

FC Barcelona and Eric Abidal have reached an agreement for the ending of the contract that united the two parties.

FC Barcelona thanked Abidal in an official statement:

“The Club would publicly like to thank Éric Abidal for his professionalism, commitment, dedication and the close and positive nature of his relationship with all aspects of the Blaugrana family” – Barcelona released the statement.

The departure is quite strange considering Barcelona’s statement on the sacking of Quique Setien as early as yesterday.

Recently, the club mentioned: ‘a wider restructuring of the first team which will be agreed between the current technical secretary and the new coach’.

Earlier this year, the Frenchman was also the target of criticism from Lionel Messi who criticized his longtime team mate of accusing the squad for Ernesto Valverde being sacked as a coach last January.

In his career, he played mainly for Lyon and Barcelona, winning 18 titles with both teams combined. The Frenchman won two Champions League trophies with the Catalans. He became one of the most popular players in the club later his career was marred by a liver tumour, which resulted in a transplant.
