If there was any doubt as to who will win the Premier League Golden Boot prior to yesterday, there isn’t anymore. Erling Haaland and his 4 goals against Wolves undoubtedly put an end to the race for the Golden Boot as the Norwegian comfortably pulled away from his competition. His stellar four-goal display means that at least 5 goals stand between him and the next striker in the line.
25 goals in 28 Premier League games is a tally worthy of securing the top scorer plaque in a season marred by injuries and stop-start form for Haaland. While Roy Keane‘s criticism of the forward comes to bite him back in the hand, his two penalties, a header and a screamer emphatically put an ‘end’ to the Golden Boot race.
The forward gave his side the lead from the spot in the 12th minute, before Rodri teed up the No.9, who leaped over his marker to head home past Jose Sa. His first-half hat-trick was completed in injury time, as he fired his second spot-kick past the Wolves keeper within half an hour.
The second half was witness to Haaland’s best and final goal of the game as he found the top-left corner of the post, curling a brilliant shot past a sea of Wolves defenders.
Fans react to Erling Haaland’s relentless goal-scoring display
Erling Haaland didn’t need much time to prove that he belongs at the very top when it comes to scoring goals. A fan said that Haaland was playing football on ‘career mode’ pointing to his unbelievable statistics. After 25 goals in 28 games, a fan claimed that he definitely deserves the Ballon d’Or over Real Madrid players and PR fuelled forwards.
Another added that Cole Palmer‘s moment of glory was over, as Haaland snatched the top spot from the likes of Alexander Isak and Palmer. As the possibility of back-to-back League titles for Manchester City presents itself, fans also noticed how Haaland can win back-to-back Golden Boots in League-winning seasons. As it stands, City are second, trailing by one point to Arsenal with a game in hand.
Many were still processing how Haaland managed to bag more goals in his first two seasons with City than he did in his 3 seasons with Borussia Dortmund! Many joked at how Roy Keane had the ‘audacity’ to call the forward ‘League Two level’ and how the Man United legend would be ‘punching the air’ in frustration.
