Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 to Use Blizzard SMS Protect System for Verification
A new Authentication system will be introduced in Modern Warfare 2
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set for release on October 28, and it couldn’t get here soon enough. Fans are eagerly waiting for the Modern Warfare sequel, and there are plenty of new features in the upcoming FPS game to look forward to. The latest news is that there will be a new verification system in the game.
Blizzard Entertainment recently released Overwatch 2 on multiple platforms such as Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and other platforms. In Overwatch 2, Blizzard Entertainment introduced a new two-factor verification system called SMS Protect that aims to protect the users from in-game abuse and toxicity. Blizzard SMS Protect System to be Adopted in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
When the next Call of Duty releases on October 28th, fans will need to connect a phone number to their Battle.net account to play the game. “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, New Overwatch 2 Accounts, and New Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 require a phone number,” reads the recently updated support page.
News of this requirement comes after a week of controversy over SMS Protect, the phone connectivity system used in Overwatch 2 and soon to come in Modern Warfare 2. After a shaky start with many people unable to play Overwatch 2 on release day due to a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack, Blizzard has announced it is lowering its requirements.

The studio previously stated that every player must have a phone number associated with their Battle.net account, but this requirement now applies only to new Overwatch players. The system was controversial in part because it failed to use “specific prepaid” numbers in connection with SMS Protect. Prior to Friday, it was noticed that players using wireless carrier services such as Cricket Wireless were unable to play the game.
At the time, it’s unclear if all Warzone 2.0 players will need a mobile phone number to play the game, which launches on November 16. Since 2020, Infinity Ward required all Warzone users to go through a two-factor authentication process. Activision Blizzard did not immediately respond to Engadget’s request for clarification and comment.
