Epic Games CEO hints at bringing back Fortnite on iOS in 2023
Recently on Twitter, Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney hinted that Fortnite might be coming back to iOS devices in 2023. Sweeney posted a tweet to greet in the new year that included the words “Next year on iOS!” and a picture of a Fortnite player gazing up at fireworks that were spelled out in the year 2023.
Epic Games avoided Apple and the App Store after breaching regulations about payment methods. In August 2022, Fortnite was removed from the App store due to violating platform guidelines. Epic Games broke App Store rules by incorporating a direct payment method that avoided Apple’s in-app purchasing mechanism. The action caused a legal dispute between Epic Games and Apple, which ultimately lead to banning Fortnite from the App Store and blamed Epic Games for breaking the terms of service.
Epic Games took the unfortunate step of violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for users. As a result the Fortnite app was removed from the store.
A report also came out that says that Both Epic Games and Apple are contesting a ruling passed on September 2021 that would have mandated Apple to permit developers to provide in-app links to external websites.
As per Epic Games, the iPhone should support other app stores as Apple’s control on iOS and the App Store is anti-competitive. Apple, on the other hand, argues that users and developers can find and discover apps in the App Store in a secure and reliable manner. The App Store, according to Sweeney, “does developers a disservice.”
Sweeney vowed in an interview that he would fight Apple all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary to win. Sweeney declared, “We are just going to fight as long as it takes to obtain what we’re asking for. And if Apple would agree to that, we would resolve the matter right away.”
