Fortnite’s skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) system is designed to match players with others who have a similar level of skill. This system has been the source of much debate within the gaming community. While some players feel that it worsens the game, while others believe that it has a positive effect.

When Fortnite was first released, there was no special matchmaking system in place. Players were simply matched with 100 random players for each match and completed quests. However, as the skill gap between players grew over time, it became more difficult for newer or less skilled players to win matches.

In an effort to address this issue, Epic Games introduced practice tournaments and a ranked mode called Arena, which were intended to separate the better players from the normal modes. They also added larger team modes such as 50 vs. 50 and Team Rumble, in which casual players could thrive.

Despite these efforts, Epic Games decided to implement a new matchmaking system in patch v10.40, which introduced SBMM to Fortnite. The goal of this system was to match players with others of similar skill level and to improve the overall balance of matches. Along with this, Epic also introduced AI bots to the game, which were designed to behave like normal players and help improve the skills of less experienced players.

However, the introduction of SBMM and forced crossplay (where players from different platforms and input methods are matched together) has been controversial. Some players feel that it punishes average players by forcing them to play against more skilled opponents.

The advantage of certain platforms and input methods cannot be compensated for by the SBMM system. Additionally, some players have reported longer waiting times for matches due to strict skill-based matching.

Despite these criticisms, Epic Games has defended the use of SBMM and forced crossplay, stating that their goal is to create more fair and enjoyable matches for players of all skill levels. Overall, the community wants Fortnite to revert back to its earlier system. It remains to be seen how the system will continue to evolve in the future.
