Game studios and developers have recently risen in popularity. This is totally due to the increasing gaming culture and a number of great games being released. Moreover, big gaming studios like Rockstar Games, CD Projekt Red, and others are always on the news. Due to their immense popularity, they sometimes suffer lots of scrutiny and security breaches, too. Furthermore, hackers attacked Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 developers, Insomniac Games, and stole loads of employee data, along with screenshots of their upcoming Wolverine game.
A while back, a hacker attacked GTA 6‘s makers, Rockstar Games, and stole internal data. From gameplay clips to GTA 6’s source code, the damage was huge. However, Rockstar later sued the hacker for the damages, and they paid for their security breach. Furthermore, breaches like these from hacker/hacker groups are becoming rather common nowadays. Stealing information or DDoSing game servers, they are pulling all sorts of shenanigans.
Moreover, big studios have to constantly be on guard against such attacks. But despite all the security and looking over the shoulder, things can go wrong at times. That’s what happened to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 developers, Insomniac Games, recently after some hackers attacked them and stole crucial company data.
Hackers attack Insomniac Games, steal employee data along with screenshots of upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine game
Insomniac Games, the company behind Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine, has allegedly been hacked by a ransomware organization that intends to sell off the data. On their website, the infamous group Rhysida Ransomware is now holding an auction in hopes of raising $2,000,000 or 50 bitcoin, for the data they stole from the gaming studio. Insomniac Games’ parent company, Sony Interactive Entertainment, is investigating the alleged hack.
Rhysida supposedly provided proof of the hack on its website by posting a collage of screenshots. These screenshots included loads of things: From emails between employees, company documents, passports, government documents of employees, and even screenshots of Insomniac’s upcoming game— Marvel’s Wolverine!
Sony Interactive Entertainment stated every news outlet regarding their situation. They said,
“We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber security attack. We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that any other SIE or Sony divisions have been impacted.”
These sorts of breaches and attacks are becoming more and more common than they should be. In 2020, Campcom suffered a similar attack, and their game, like Street Fighter 6, was leaked. Although the crackdown on these groups and hackers has been going in full force, the recent attack on Insomniac Games shows that much work is needed.
