Marvel’s Spider-Man is leaving PS Plus in May

Sony’s PlayStation Plus service offers subscribers access to a variety of games for a monthly fee. The service has different tiers, providing different levels of access. The Game Catalog, available to Extra and Premium subscribers, offers up to 400 titles for players to enjoy. However, some games are removed from the service each month as part of Sony’s normal content refresh. This includes Marvel’s Spider-Man in May.

Members with Game Catalog benefits can still play until May 15. However, they will lose access to the game after that date. If they wish to continue playing, they must purchase it directly from the PlayStation Store. This practice of removing popular first-party titles doesn’t sit well with some PlayStation fans, especially when compared to Xbox Game Pass. Xbox Game Pass tends to add and keep first-party games in its vault in perpetuity.

The Game Catalog is not the same as the monthly base PS Plus offerings. PS Plus offerings only ever give access to the featured games for that month. In April, Sony announced several new additions to the Game Catalog. This included games like Dishonored and Doom Eternal. The catalog also included the extreme sports multiplayer sim Riders Republic, and the FPS Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus.

Sony’s decision to remove Marvel’s Spider-Man from the Game Catalog is understandable. The Insomniac developed game was released in 2018 and has been available for quite some time. However, its removal may disappoint some players who were hoping to continue playing the game as part of their subscription. On the other hand, it could encourage those who haven’t played the game yet to purchase it directly from the PlayStation Store.

It’s worth noting that Sony has not commented on whether it plans to add Marvel’s Spider-Man back to the Game Catalog at a later date. Xbox Game Pass, on the other hand, has been praised for its approach to first-party games. Microsoft often adds and keeping titles in its vault in perpetuity. This has led to a loyal fan base for Xbox Game Pass. The Xbox fanbase appreciate the ongoing access to games like Halo Infinite and Minecraft.

Despite the criticism, Sony’s Game Catalog still offers a vast selection of games for subscribers to enjoy, with new titles added each month. And for those who are interested in playing Marvel’s Spider-Man, purchasing the game directly from the PlayStation Store is still an option. Overall, while the removal of popular titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man may disappoint some players, it’s important to remember that Sony’s normal content refresh ensures that the Game Catalog remains fresh and up-to-date with new titles for subscribers to enjoy.
