Twitch CEO Emmett Shear resigns, Dan Clancy to take over
Emmett Shear has acted as Twitch CEO since its inception 16 years ago.
Emmett Shear, the co-founder of Twitch, recently announced that he will step down from his position as CEO. This comes after he acted as CEO of the video streaming platform that he created over 16 years ago. In a blog post, Shear revealed that he would transition to an advisory role in the company. The current President of Twitch, Dan Clancy, will take over as CEO.
During Shear’s tenure, Twitch grew from a live streaming platform primarily intended for gamers to a popular online entertainment hub. The platform now boasts numerous online stars who generate millions of dollars by streaming their content. However, Twitch has faced criticism in recent months for its revenue-sharing policies with streamers. In response to this criticism, Twitch revealed a new revenue-sharing model in September of the previous year. The new model allows the platform’s top creators to keep 70% of their revenue share for the first $100,000 earned, with a 50% share after that.

Who is replacing Emmett Shear?
Dan Clancy, a former executive at Google, NASA, and Nextdoor, will take charge of Twitch during a period of ongoing growth and innovation in the competitive online entertainment industry. His primary goal will be to lead Twitch’s expansion while maintaining the platform’s reputation as a supporter of content creators.
Clancy has extensive experience in leading and growing tech companies. During his time at Google, he oversaw the development of Google Book Search and Google News. At NASA, he served as the Chief Technologist for the Agency and helped to develop the Mars Curiosity rover. He later joined Nextdoor, where he was responsible for the international expansion.
Twitch is one of the world’s largest video streaming platforms. Twitch has millions of daily users and a vast selection of content. It was acquired by Amazon for nearly $1 billion in 2014. Twitch has since continued to grow and expand its offerings. As the online entertainment industry continues to evolve, the appointment of Dan Clancy as CEO signals Twitch’s commitment to maintaining its position as a leading platform for content creators and viewers alike.
Emmett Shear, Michael Seibel, Kyle Vogt, and Justin Kan founded Twitch in 2007 as Justin.tv. Originally, the concept began as a content stunt, with Kan streaming his entire life 24/7. Though the stunt wasn’t successful, it revealed a desire for live stream content. Later that year, the company announced that it would allow anyone to live stream, paving the way for the Twitch we know today.
