“It’s always nerve-racking,” Valkyrae talks about her role in The Family Plan, wants to bring more visibility to women in gaming spaces

Rachel Hofstetter, popularly known as Valkyrae, speaks about her role in her first movie, The Family Plan. Earlier this month, she was captured attending the film’s premiere. Her all-red outfit to the premiere had her fans going over the moon. Furthermore, this was her second foray into the movie space, with her first being the voice of Commander Red in the Netflix series Sonic Prime.

The Family Plan is an action comedy movie directed by Simon Cellan Jones. It starred Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan as its lead actors. The film aired on AppleTV+. Furthermore, she played the role of an IGL of a Valorant team, leading her team to victory.

“Honestly, I feel like it’s the best first role I could have ever, ever asked for. I was just when I learned that they wanted me to literally be Valkyrie. I was like, wow, this is great. Because I don’t have any acting experience. So just to be able to play myself in a gaming role felt appropriate. And it felt genuine as well. So, I was just stoked. It was over the moon.”

Valkyrae further explains that even though she was playing herself, it was initially pretty nerve-racking. She also mentioned that all the other actors were very nice to her. Moreover, She claimed that acting is something she imagines herself doing in the future.

Valkyrae mentions that one of her main goals is to normalize being a woman in the gaming space

In an interview, Valkyrie mentions that she has been pushing herself to try things that she would never usually do. She has been taking up all the opportunities she is getting, whether it’s voice acting, doing cameos in music videos, or modelling for Vogue Philippines. Furthermore, she adds that she has been doing all this to remain an inspiration to other women.

“When I was growing up, I was bullied for gaming…I hid it, I kept it a secret. Although, I got very lucky because my family was okay with me gaming. You know, seeing it being shown in movies like this, I think it’ll be more accepted and people will be able to just have fun and more opportunities arise because of this.”

Rae also talked about her movie-shooting experiences. She said that Apple was very attentive about everything, and she would love to do something like this again. Furthermore, she added that she didn’t get the chance to play Valorant on set. All the actors had to react to the gameplay that had already been recorded.

“I’m just really grateful to have had these opportunities from gaming, which I didn’t think was possible. But yeah, it’s always nerve-racking. It’s never easy, but I just know that like people are watching and like a lot of my fans and friends and families are inspired by me.”

Valkyrie claims that despite a lot of women playing games, there’s still a stigma around it. However, according to her, the portrayal of female gamers in movies will help remove the stigma around gaming for women. Even though, Valkyrie is only 10 minutes in, it is quite a big step for her and the overall female streamer community.
