Despite being one of the biggest games to be played in history of gaming, Minecraft does not have a show or a movie to its name to date. Although earning its publishers Mojang Studios millions of dollars, a Minecraft movie was not something fans or the company sought out for.

Warner Bros. recently announced that Minecraft: The Movie is under the works and set to release in April of 2025. The movie is said to have been under production on for almost a decade. Minecraft: The Movie is being directed by Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. The movie was initially supposed to be directed by Shawn Levy before he dropped out in 2014. he was then replaced by Rob McElhenny, starring Steve Carrel in 2015. This did not see any light as Rob left the director’s seat in 2018. In 2019 Peter Sollet best known for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist took over as the director. He even rewrote the script from scratch. He left in 2022, paving way for Jared Hess.

Jason Mamoa, most famous for his role as the Aquaman in the movie Aquaman set in the DC universe is set to star in the live action movie of Minecraft. So far he is the only member of the cast that has been revealed to the public after a swirl of numerous directors. Momoa is said to be playing the role of Gabriel the Warrior, from the adventure spin-off Minecraft: Story Mode. Along with Jared Hess, Momoa and him are the only confirmed member of the movie so far.

The Minecraft: Story Mode was developed and published by Telltale Games. Minecraft: Story mode is a point and click game episode based game based on Mojang Studio’s sandbox game, Minecraft. The first five episode of the game were released from October 2015 through March 2016.

Minecraft: Story mode takes place in the world based on Minecraft known as “Overworld” following the story of the protagonist Gabriel the Warrior on his adventures. Players can collect item, solve puzzles and talk to Non-Playable characters in the game. The components such as crafting and building are also ingrained into the game as its is one of the important features of the main game Minecraft.
