Games have been around for decades now and as you must know, the industry has turned into much more than it originally was, and so have the games! We’ve come a long way from simple games like pong, and come to the level of AAA titles being released almost every single month! But of course, with huge popularity, comes huge controversy.
With so many games coming out every single year, there are numerous people who play these games. And of course, with so many people playing so many games, the number of opinions on every game can only be imagined!
Of course, every game cannot be positively reviewed, and not every game can be negatively reviewed either. There are always differences in opinions and there’s usually a deciding factor which essentially makes a game good or bad. However, what if it all comes down to subjective factors that matter for a few people and don’t for the rest? You get controversy! We look at a few of the most controversial games in recent times today!

Death Stranding
Hideo Kojima, known to be the mastermind behind the Metal Gear series of games, set out to develop an entire new genre of games with Death Stranding. He called the new upcoming genre “Strand”. The controversial events that followed however, isn’t what he expected.
While a lot of people went on to applaud Kojima’s genius and hailed him to be the next pioneer in gaming and single player games, a lot of them also disagreed calling the gameplay repetitive and rather boring because of the way the characters and missions were designed.
People complained that Death Stranding had a lot of walking involved in it and some went even as far as to call it a “Walking Simulator”! Though the same people applauded the game for coming up with an amazing concept, the execution of the idea was where the game was lacklustre.
Gotham Knights
In the DC Multiverse, imagine a world where Batman is dead. That’s right – he’s gone. In a controversial world where Gotham loses its protector, who will rise up to protect its streets from the unlawful and those of the criminal mindset?
In come the Gotham Knights – the entire Bat Family for the people who have read the comics and have an idea of what this was getting to. The game lets you play as numerous different characters from the Bat Family such as NightWing aka Dick Grayson who was the first ever Robin, RedHood aka Jason Todd, the second Robin who is well known for his anger issues, and more!
The entire bat family comes together in this game to put up a good display of the story that the creative directors went through a lot of trouble writing and constructing. However, even though the story is very engaging, the complaints that people had were mostly based around how much the game required you to grind to actually unlock each hero’s fullest potential making it a rather unpleasant experience.
The Last of Us Pt. II
Shocking? It won’t be once you’re done reading about why this block buster game landed on our list here. With the Last of Us sequel, it had a lot of hype being carried around it. People had been eagerly waiting for one of the biggest blockbusters to have a sequel and here it was! But of course, as happens with every other sequel to every other good thing, controversial arguments rose and there was no stopping them!

As the game starts, soon enough we are faced by a tragic change in the formula of the game – the duo of Joel and Ellie is broken as Joel is murdered not soon after the game starts. This fact is used as emotional development for Ellie and for the people who really like the Father-Daughter dynamic between the two characters, it was certainly a bitter moment to start off with.
Not just that, players get to play through two perspectives – one from the perspective of Ellie, and the second through the perspective of Joel’s murderer, Abby. Naughty Dog was severely criticized for having pulled such a stunt by a lot of players which is what makes this game, a perfect suitor for the list.

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla
The Assassin’s Creed series has been one to always be well received by players and critics alike. Valhalla was no exception to this, except for a few not-so-right things about the game which landed it on our list here.
For starters, there is absolutely no complaints about the gameplay of the game or the mechanics. The problem here, is how long the game is. Valhalla keeps on going for about an average of 60.5 hours which a lot of players had a complaint about.
The game being so long wasn’t the only issue that they had though, people also cannot seem to get over the new RPG-esque playstyle that Ubisoft has been taking the Assassin’s Creed series into. For some, the olden times were simpler when all you had to do in those games were simple assassinations and make sure that you don’t get spotted.
Cyberpunk 2077
Of course, the crown prince of controversy, you better believe Cyberpunk 2077 is on our list because this game right here, is the gold mine of controversies. From its disaster of a release, to the entire source code being leaked online by hackers, CD Projekt Red had a curse on their hands when they released Cyberpunk 2077.
With the game’s extremely bad initial reception from the audience because of the infinite bugs that haunted the game, the hype that CD Projekt Red had been building about their latest upcoming title , all fell through and the reviews plummeted.
It wasn’t just the bugs however, the way the devs handled the entire situation overall wasn’t very well appreciated by the audience either. It seemed as though the people at CDR just couldn’t have handled the situation any worse than they already did.
And those were the most controversial games in recent times! From Cyberpunk 2077 to the Last of Us Pt 2. Every single title was on this list for different reasons yet the same – the reason being that it divided gamers into two massive factions with both factions presenting a solid argument for what they believed in!
Controversy is a huge part of the gaming world. Be it the drama that surrounds the developers who are overworked, or the eSports titles that see mishaps happen every single day in one way or another. This list was just a glimpse into the world of controversy that the world of gaming has to offer.
