Euro 2020 Portugal Vs France Player Ratings: Portugal and France play out a nail-biting 2-2 draw as both qualify for the Knockouts

Euro 2020 Portugal Vs France Player Ratings

Portugal and France played out a fiesty 2-2 draw at the Puskas Arena in Hungary, in a clinching EURO 2020 Group F fixture that went right down the wire, with Portugal’s knockout qualification on the line and France looking to top the group. Portugal went ahead via a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty early on after a dog fight for much of the first half. Karim Benzema drew level for France just before the halftime from another penalty and doubled France’s lead in the 47th minute. However, there was another twist in the tale with Ronaldo putting things level from another coolly slotted penalty at the hour mark, with both teams battling it out for a draw at the end. France ended at the top courtesy this result and will be facing Switzerland, while Portugal qualified as the third placed team from the group to book another top draw match against Belgium in the round of 16s of this year’s Euro 2020.

Here are our player ratings for the Portugal Vs France tie.

Rui Patricio – 7/10

Patricio save

A good save from an Mbappe shot early in the match. Nothing much to do for the two goals. Made a brilliant stretching save to a stop Pogba’s long range strike following with a quickie to deny Griezmann up close.

Nelson Semedo
– 6.5/10

Unfortunate to concede a soft penalty for a light challenge on Mbappe in the box. A better performance than the last two games, leaving very little space for Mbappe to run into.

Pepe – 6/10

Solid at the back. Crucial headed clearances and interceptions.

Ruben Dias (CB) – 5/10

A rather unusual poor performance. Was not found at the right place at the right time to make the correct challenges and clearances.

Raphael Guerreiro – 5/10

Tried to go forward at times with plenty of room at offer, but rather ineffective and double minded to venture out. Was caught napping a few times when France pushed through the flanks.

Joao Moutinho – 6/10

Good determined game against a top French midfield. Rotated the ball well when Portugal were in possession. Put a dangerous set piece into the box that resulted in the first Portuguese penalty, with Ronaldo slotting it eventually.

Danilo Pereira – 7/10

Busy day in the midfield to keep the French from breaking in. Constantly fell back when the French moved up and tried to break their play.

Renato Sanches – 7.5/10

Relentless. Portugal’s midfield engine. Chasing the ball, falling back to break play, carrying the ball forward, he did everything. Deserves plaudits for it.

Bernardo Silva – 7/10

Regularly dropped to the midfield for the ball and make play. Tried to make runs down the flanks.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 8/10

Ronaldo scores from the spot

Probably the calmest man in the entire stadium. Kept his nerve to motivate his team even when the French went up. Worked tirelessly in the attack, drawing the second penalty. Scored both with an ice cold nerve which were massive from Portugal’s point of view.

Diogo Jota – 5/10

Rather kept quiet for most of the games but looked to threaten given the chance.

Joao Palhinha – 5.5/10

Bruno Fernandes – 5.5/10

Ruben Neves – 6/10

Diogo Dalot – 5/10

France Player Ratings

Action in the France Portugal match

Hugo Lloris – 5/10

Lloris catches Danilo in the face to give away the penalty

Conceded the first penalty as he caught Danilo in the face while trying to parry the ball out. Couldn’t do much to stop the two penalties.

Jules Kounde – 6/10

Good at the right back position, offering little space on his side. Conceded the third penalty as the ball struck his outstretched hand but he had very little to do about it.

Raphael Varane – 5.5/10

Tried keeping Ronaldo silent and partly succeeded. One of his messy headed clearances fell for Ronaldo giving him a good view at goal, but was shot wide.

Presnel Kimpembe – 7/10

More solid of the two centre backs. Offered almost nothing and cleared everything that came his way. Dispossessed Ronaldo a couple of times.

Lucas Hernandez – 4/10

Bernardo Silva dominated against and made runs in spaces behind him. Rather forgetful performance from the Bayern Munich man.

N’Golo Kante – 6/10

Wasn’t in his usual best but still was decent. Renato Sanches had a good battle with him in the midfield. Retained the ball and some good recoveries.

Paul Pogba – 8/10

Again a fantastic performance from the Manchester United man. Brilliant through ball over the head which Benzema latched onto to score France’s second. Lashed a perfect power shot to the top corner that drew a fantastic save from Patricio.

Corentin Tolisso – 6/10

Looked good in the midfield, playing in a deeper role than usual. Double minded going forward but did well whenever he got to. Was given a more defensive role in the second half after both the left backs had to be replaced.

Antoine Griezmann – 6/10

Griezmann in action

Didn’t do much in the attacking half but dropped deep at times to press and break Portugal’s play and did well. Received an early booking for a rash challenge on Danilo.

Karim Benzema – 8/10

Benzema after levelling for France

Looked threatening as always. Slotted home his penalty before latching onto a through ball from Pogba and guiding it to the far post with an impeccable finish.

Benzema scores from the spot

Kylian Mbappe – 6/10

Very little space offered to him by Semedo and Dalot on the flanks. Went down too easily when Semedo challenged him in the box to draw a soft penalty. Drew a good save from Patricio early in the game.

Lucas Digne – N/A

Adrien Rabiot – 6/10

Kingsley Coman – 5/10

Moussa Sissoko – N/A

Karim Benzema – 8/10 (France)
