- Eva Lys and Coco Gauff both exited the Madrid Open in the first and fourth rounds, respectively.
- Lys struggled with a TikTok dance challenge, admitting she found it tougher than playing tennis.
- Gauff aims for her third clay-court singles title at the upcoming Italian Open after a runner-up finish last year.
Both Eva Lys and Coco Gauff crashed out of the ongoing Madrid Open. The German ace suffered a first-round exit, losing to Zhang Shuai in three sets.
Gauff, a heavy favorite to win the title, suffered defeat at the hands of Linda Noskova in the fourth round. She finished as the runner-up at the tournament last year, losing to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Lys, who reached the quarterfinals of last year’s China Open, has played two WTA 1000 events this year, losing in the first round of both.
But before their exit, they spent some time together off the court and also recorded a dance challenge. For Lys, dancing was tough as she admitted the same during her appearance on The Changeover Podcast.
I did my first kind of dancing TikTok with Coco. She didn’t pressure me, but she wanted to do one, and I’m like, you’ve got to pick the easiest dance because I cannot dance. I just can’t, I look ridiculous. It took us a couple of tries, even that motion, I’m like, man, that’s tougher than playing tennis. I don’t know, my hips lie. Guys, my hips lie big time.
Lys, the winner of three ITF titles, has yet to lift a tour-level title. Gauff hasn’t yet won a title since last year’s Wuhan Open, but has played one final this year. She reached the title clash of the Miami Open but lost the title to Sabalenka.
For me, the most important thing for me is just like enjoying. Enjoyment doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t work your a** off, and you shouldn’t fight for your dreams like obviously I do know what I’m capable of, and I’ll do everything I can to get there.
Eva Lys added
Lys has so far made two appearances in Madrid. Last year, her run ended in the second round.
Linda Noskova shares how she defeated Coco Gauff
Linda Noskova clinched a comeback win with a 6-4, 1-6 scoreline to defeat Coco Gauff for the first time in her career after two consecutive defeats. After the match, Noskova explained who she eliminated the two-time Grand Slam singles champion.

I know the match is not over until it’s over. I was kind of saying to myself that I’m still close … even though it’s 1-4. I just wanted to find my rhythm and my game all over again.
Linda Noskova told reporters
Noskova, however, fell in the quarterfinal, losing to Marta Kostyuk in straight sets. Before her match against the Czech ace, the 22-year-old came from a set down to beat Sorana Cirstea while battling illness, and also threw up into the bin. Although Gauff did not withdraw mid-match, several players, due to a mystery virus, ended up withdrawing from the tournament, including former Madrid champion Iga Swiatek.
I was kind of hoping or counting on that game [in the second set] that I was going to have the break up, and then it didn’t happen, and I kind of lost my rhythm. Obviously, also with Coco, who is such a player, it’s never easy to find it immediately back again and continue the way you want it to play. But I just wanted to restart in the third set.
Linda Noskova added
Next is the Italian Open, and Gauff, who finished as the runner-up last year, will be chasing her third clay-court singles title. The two titles she lifted on the surface are: the 2021 Emilia-Romagna Open and last year’s Roland Garros.
Last year in Rome, Gauff lost the title to home favorite Jasmine Paolini. Before arriving in Madrid, Gauff played in Stuttgart, but her run ended in the quarterfinals against eventual runner-up Karolina Muchova.
