In Short
  • Mirra Andreeva reached the Madrid Open semifinal for the first time in her career after defeating Leylah Fernandez.
  • She expressed a desire for high heels as her birthday wish during a post-match interview.
  • Andreeva will face Hailey Baptiste in the semifinal, who recently achieved her first top 5 win.

Mirra Andreeva will be playing the Madrid Open semifinal for the first time in her career. On Tuesday (April 28th), Andreeva knocked out 2021 US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez 7-6(1), 6-3 to reach a WTA 1000 semifinal for the first time this season.

Andreeva secured her quarterfinal win on the eve of her 19th birthday. During the post-match interview, when she was asked about her birthday wishes, she revealed that all she wanted was a nice pair of high heels.

It’s not a secret. I don’t know, for some reason lately I really want a nice pair of high heels. I think yeah, maybe the age is getting better of me, but I was looking at some pairs, you know, in some different shops, so I have to consult with my family, and we’ll see, we’ll see.

Madrid is a special place for Andreeva because, apart from her, her father and mother also celebrate their birthdays here. It was here back in 2023 that Andreeva made her WTA 1000 debut and reached the fourth round. In the following two seasons, she reached the quarterfinals.

Honestly, if like the high heels. I’m okay, but I’m just afraid that if they’re any higher, I’m going to just break my foot, and you know that’s not very good. So I’m just going to try to find like a little heel, maybe something like this, a kitten heel.

Andreeva has already lifted two WTA 1000 titles. Last year, after her victory over Clara Tauson in the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships, Andreeva upset World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final.

I feel like I am playing great. Most of all, I am very proud of how I handled my emotions because it was tricky. Leylah is a great competitor and person as well. We have practiced together so many times this year, and at some point, I felt like this year we are going to play against each other. It happened here in Madrid. I am super happy with the win in Madrid and how I played.

Andreeva will next be up against someone who stunned defending champion Sabalenka in the quarterfinals to tie her head-to-head record over the Belarusian to 1-1. It’s Hailey Baptiste, who came from a set down and saved six championship points to snap the 15-match winning streak of the four-time Grand Slam singles champion. It was her career’s first top 5 win.

Before entering the Spanish capital, the 27-year-old became just the fifth woman to complete the Sunshine Double by defeating Elena Rybakina in the Indian final and Coco Gauff in the Miami Open final.

Andreeva has faced the American ace before in singles. They met in the third round of last year’s Wimbledon, which Andreeva won. Baptiste will be playing a WTA 1000 semifinal for the first time in her career. She is also chasing her career’s first singles title, while Andreeva has already played six singles finals, winning five titles.

In WTA 1000 events this year, Andreeva, after her Qatar Open third-round exit, lost in the quarterfinals of the Dubai Tennis Championships. Then, in Indian Wells and Miami, her campaign ended in the third and fourth rounds, respectively. Andreeva has already lifted two titles this year. She beat Victoria Mboko in the Adelaide International final and later went past Anastasia Potapova in the Linz Open final.
