Jannik Sinner has been at the center of a major tennis controversy since the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced that he failed a doping test. The Italian star’s case will continue next year as it has been appealed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Ex-CAS member Angelo Cascella recently predicted the outcome of the doping verdict.
The ITIA revealed in August that Sinner twice tested positive for the banned substance clostebol in March. The Italian defended that the substance entered his system after his former physio Giacomo Naldi used an over-the-counter spray on him with a cut on his own hand. The ITIA accepted the defense ruling that the World No. 1 had no significant fault or negligence on his part.
However, the ruling has a mixed response from the tennis community, with many criticizing the ITIA for being partial. WADA appealed the ruling in September to the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The anti-doping body is seeking at least a two-year ban on Sinner as they believe that he bears responsibility for the contamination.
During a recent interview, Ex-CAS member Angelo Cascella revealed that Sinner may be banned for one or two years.
Cascella also added that Sinner must bear the responsibility of the unintentional contamination and not his staff. He stressed that there’s a new ruling coming up in 2027, which could lead to the cancellation of Sinner’s type of case, but the Italian won’t be lucky as his verdict will be passed next year.
Top lawyer says Jannik Sinner’s doping case can make him lose several sponsorship deals
Since the Jannik Sinner’s doping saga was announced, the Italian has done well to defend himself to the media. He has also proved that he can deal with the pressure by winning three titles since August, including the US Open. With his fate still being on the balance, the Italian career might face a severe thunderstorm.
During the aforementioned interview, Angelo Cascella revealed that the threat facing Sinner isn’t just only the doping scandal but also financial threat. He pointed out that he could lose sponsorship contracts if CAS finds him guilty.
However, CAS has yet to reveal when Sinner’s doping case hearing will begin. Nevertheless, the 23-year-old will open his 2025 campaign at the Australian Open which starts on January 12.
