Sebastian Vettel is a four-time F1 world champion, considered by many as an all-time great. The German driver retired from the sport in 2022, while leaving the door open for a return. Now, former Red Bull driver David Coulthard has warned Vettel from making such a comeback.

The four-time world champion had an underwhelming end to his F1 career. Sebastian Vettel was effectively let go by Ferrari after 2020 to join Aston Martin the following year. The Silverstone team was still in a rebuilding phase, which led to Vettel only securing a single podium finish in his final two seasons.

David Coulthard recalled Sebastian Vettel’s comments about being tempted for a return. DC asserted that the German driver can only think of such a move if he is illusioned about being faster after couple of years without racing. Vettel had even considered racing at the 24 hours of Le Mans last year.

No! Only if he lives in an illusion thinking that, after a couple of years of pause, he can be faster.

David Coulthard gives Sebastian Vettel ‘stopwatch’ reality check

Coulthard emphasized that everything is about lap times in Formula 1. He claimed that the stopwatch never lied. The former McLaren driver highlighted that Vettel was nowhere close to competitive times by the end of his career. As such, DC does not expect things to improve for the German in this regard.

The reality is that the stopwatch does not lie, and at the end of his career he was no longer doing the lap times necessary to be competitive.

David Coulthard explained

It is unlikely that Sebastian Vettel would return to the grid as a driver. However, the four-time world champion might consider a different role, perhaps promoting sustainability on the grid. Fans will have to wait for some time longer to see where Vettel is headed for the coming years.
