Ireland Davis Cup captain Conor Niland compared the two young talents, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, and called the former the better despite Sinner’s consistent performance this season. Niland lauded the Spaniard for his incredible performance during the summer this year.
Alcaraz, after clinching his first title of the season at Indian Wells, won his first French Open with a five-set win over Alexander Zverev. He then outclassed Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, beating the Serb for the second time in a row to clinch his second title at SW19.
The 21-year-old reached another final, at the Paris Olympics, and met Djokovic, though he failed to win the gold medal on his debut in the quadrennial tournament.
Though the youngster did not have a decent campaign at the US Open, Niland pointed out how Alcaraz picked himself up and is ‘still out there playing Davis Cup and ATP Finals’.
Carlos Alcaraz on the brink of elimination from ATP Finals
Carlos Alcaraz lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets at the ATP Finals, registering his second group-stage defeat in the tournament. Alcaraz needed to win his match against Zverev in straight sets to have a better chance of qualifying for the semifinals.
But he lost the opening set, and knowing that he was on the cusp of elimination, he threw his racket when he returned to his bench. Casper Ruud now has a better chance to progress to the last four. His win over Andrey Rublev would end Alcaraz’s all hopes for a semifinal spot.
Alcaraz was defeated in straight sets by Ruud in his first match. But the Murcia born went past Rublev to still stay in contention for the last four.
In the penultimate group-stage match, it was Zverev’s second win over Alcaraz in their four meetings this season. Alcaraz defeated the German in the Indian Wells quarterfinals and French Open finals, while Zverev’s victory over the Spaniard, before the ATP Finals, came in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open. The 27-year-old has now taken a 6-5 lead over Alcaraz in their head-to-head encounters.
