Brand new details emerged about Marshawn Kneeland’s death. The former Dallas Cowboys defensive end reportedly died due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
On Thursday, news emerged that the Texas Department of Public Safety received notification of an abandoned vehicle in the southbound lanes of Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway. The troopers set a perimeter and discovered the deceased body of Marshawn Kneeland. Fort Worth Star-Telegram’s Nick Harris posted a heartbreaking update on his X handle.
Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Troopers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation on the northbound lanes of the Dallas North Tollway near Keller Springs Blvd. The driver refused to stop, resulting in a pursuit with DPS Troopers… The vehicle was later located abandoned and had been involved in a crash on the southbound lanes of Dallas Parkway near Warren Parkway. DPS Aircraft and Troopers, along with the Frisco Police Department, searched the immediate area and found the driver, 24 YOA, Marshawn Kneeland, of Plano, deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Later in the day, TMZ shared the dispatch audio obtained from the Plano Police Department. They received word that Kneeland had reportedly sent goodbye messages to his girlfriend minutes before leaving in a car. She also alerted them about Kneeland being armed with a gun.
The NFL contacted Plano Police and asked them to expedite the search for Kneeland. According to TMZ, troopers used dogs and drones to help locate Kneeland.
Reports indicated that a male subject, later identified as 24-year-old Marshawn Kneeland of Plano, TX, fled the scene on foot. Officers established a perimeter and initiated a search of the area with the assistance of the FPD K-9 and Drone units.

At the time of his death, Kneeland was just 24 years old. He was in his second year with the Cowboys after being drafted in the second round following five years of college football at Western Michigan.
The Dallas Cowboys released a statement about Marshawn Kneeland’s death
Kneeland made 11 appearances during his rookie season, recording 14 tackles, a pass deflection, and a fumble recovery. His role on the Cowboys increased in 2025, with 15 tackles, a sack, and 2 tackles for loss in 7 starts.

Kneeland was part of the Cowboys’ special teams during the Monday Night clash against the Arizona Cardinals. He scored a touchdown after the Cowboys’ defense blocked a Cardinals punt.
Two days later, Kneeland was pronounced dead. The Cowboys released a statement, mourning his untimely passing.

A grief-stricken Cowboys quarterback, Dak Prescott, struggled to find the right words when asked about the impact of Kneeland’s death.

According to a report from the Dallas Morning News, Kneeland’s mother passed away two months before the NFL Combine, which shook him very much. During the interview, he confessed that losing his mother was a tough situation for him. A year later, he also left the mortal realm for the ethereal.
