Adrian Newey explains the creative process behind the RB17 Hypercar
Adrian Newey in an interview shared his thoughts about working on the RB17 Hypercar, of which 50 units will be made. Newey expressed the enjoyment he felt of creating something different. He’s been in F1 for many years and sometimes he feels to work on some different projects outside of the usual racing environment. This approach inspired him and kept his ideas fresh. By taking on new challenges, he avoided the feeling of repeating himself. This process added new energy into his work in F1 and encouraged him to think creatively when designing racing cars.
I guess there’s a number of years I’ve been in F1 that to keep myself fresh and avoid going stale, I feel sometimes I need other projects to kind of give inspiration and so forth so that when I’m in F1, I’m not feeling as if I’m always doing the same thing.Adrian Newey explained
Newey’s Valkyrie was the first project that inspired him to explore new ideas. After completing that he began to think about what his next project could be. He stated he didn’t want to create a second version of Valkyrie but something unique and different. The 65-year-old said he spent a lot of time thinking about this and considering various options. He knew that coming up with a fresh concept was important, so he took his time to plan and reflect on what could come next in his design journey and the RB17 was discovered. Each RB17 will cost $6.2 million.
The Valkyrie was the first project in that mould, then I kind of started to think what can be the next project? I didn’t want to simply do Valkyrie 2, it had to be something different. I pondered that for quite a while.Adrian Newey added
Certainly, Adrian Newey stated as a motorcars designer he wanted to work on something new apart from F1 and the earlier project Valkyrie which he worked on. Project Valkyrie inspired him to explore new ideas, rather than just creating another version of it.
