Adrian Newey is considered the greatest designer in the history of motorsport. The Aero genius spearheaded Red Bull’s dominance in F1, but decided to leave the team last year. Now, the Briton has admitted he would not have expected such an exit from Milton Keynes.

Newey joined Red Bull in 2005, less than a year since the energy drinks giant acquired the Jaguar F1 team. Since then, the 66-year-old has designed several championship-winning cars which led to the dominance of Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. Adrian Newey had written in his book, ‘How to build a car,’ that he simply didn’t want to leave Milton Keynes.

This feeling had continued over the years. The aero genius confessed that he would not have believed that he would leave Red Bull if someone asked him about such a possibility a year ago. So much so, that Adrian Newey labeled it as a ‘crazy’ question. The 66-year-old will join Aston Martin in March this year.

Honesty led to Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin switch

Red Bull Racing was in a state of upheaval at the start of 2024. Tensions escalated within the team over an investigation into Christian Horner. This was rumored to have played a role in Newey’s departure. The aero genius stated that he wouldn’t have been true to himself if he stayed at Red Bull. The Briton stated that honesty forced him to leave Milton Keynes and look for greener pastures.

For various reasons, I felt I wouldn’t be true to myself if I stayed at Red Bull. So the first difficult decision was exactly that—do I stay or not at Red Bull. I obviously came to the conclusion that in being honest with myself, I couldn’t.

Certainly, Adrian Newey’s exit has had an impact on the Austrian team. The 66-year-old will now switch his focus on the new chapter with Aston Martin. The aero genius will leave no stone unturned to get the Silverstone-based squad at the front of the grid in 2026. On the other hand, Red Bull will look to lessen the blow of his absence.
