McLaren is currently undergoing massive problems within their squad despite dominating the grid in terms of performance. The team is being accused of a British bias against Oscar Piastri, with Lando Norris reportedly being favored by the former.
However, amid such brutal claims against the British constructor, the 1980 F1 champion Alan Jones lashes out at the uncertain claims and provides it a hilarious title.
Since the beginning of the 2025 season, McLaren has refused to intervene between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri with team orders. However, the team backtracked on their decision and asked the drivers to swap positions at the Italian GP, putting Piastri at a disadvantage. This caused a lot of backlash towards not only the team but also Norris, who has faced booing in subsequent races.
Still, Alan Jones pays no attention to the criticism of McLaren, claiming that it was the greatest load of nonsense that he had ever heard. Jones further criticized the fact that such baseless claims were heard every season without any truth to them.
The Aussie claimed that it was either about Mark Webber being favored over Sebastian Vettel or getting preferential treatment. The 1980 champion reiterated that such claims were absolutely ‘crap’.
It’s the greatest load of nonsense of all time,Every single season we come across this bull**it. It’s either Mark Webber against Vettel, or it’s somebody. It’s always, ‘Oh, he’s got a better car than me’ or ‘He’s getting preferential treatment’. It’s absolute crap.
Alan Jones said on the ABC’s Summer Grandstand podcast.
Alan Jones raised a logical point that the teams did not spend a fortune traveling between countries for races, and then prefer one driver over the other. Jones reassured that both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were getting the same treatment at McLaren, and there were no intentions of foul play. Further, the 1980 F1 champion highlighted that he knew Zak Brown very well, and he was definitely not favoring Norris over Piastri.
These teams don’t spend absolute fortunes travelling halfway around the world to stymie one car or give preference to the other. I can assure you that both these cars are getting the same sort of treatment. I know [McLaren Racing CEO] Zak Brown very well, he’s a good racer, and he’d be giving both these blokes equal chances.

Alan Jones claims Oscar Piastri can ‘win and lead the driver’s title’ again
Oscar Piastri had emerged as the favorite to win the title since the beginning of the season. He had a great lead in the title standings. However, his mysterious lack of pace in the recent races has cost him heavily, and he has lost a lot of running in the title fight. Still, with three races left in the 2025 season, Alan Jones believes that Piastri can turn his season around if he manages to win the upcoming Las Vegas GP.

Alan Jones fired some shots at the ‘rare experts’ who did not comment on everyday matters regarding Formula 1, but they knew it all when it came to speaking against McLaren.
Jones reckoned that these people wouldn’t even recognize the team’s challenger from one end to the other. He claimed that such comments were pure nonsense. Moreover, the 84-year-old pointed out that Lando Norris could suffer from a DNF and Piastri could take the lead for the driver’s title.
Then you get all the rare experts coming out of the woodwork, with their opinions on this, that and the other thing. Half of them wouldn’t know one end of a car from another, but they’re free to give their advice whether it’s needed or not. It’s just nonsense. Norris could have a DNF, Oscar win and end up back in the lead again.
Alan Jones noted.
Certainly, the 2025 season has been extremely exciting and cutthroat so far. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are equally deserving of the title win. Norris has been in Formula 1 for a bit longer than Piastri, and hence his championship win would surely mean a lot more to him. However, time will tell which driver comes out on top, as for now, Woking will definitely not interfere between the two drivers.
