Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris both have emerged as the favorites to win the driver’s title in the 2025 season. Piastri is leading the title standings with just nine points ahead of the summer break. Norris is prepared to give it his all in the final ten races and trump his Aussie counterpart in the standings. Regardless of the championship winner this year, McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella insisted that both drivers are equally deserving of the title win.

Oscar Piastri has made little to no errors in the 2025 season, which has helped him maintain his lead in the standings so far. Lando Norris, on the other hand, committed multiple mistakes early on in the year, which cost him the championship lead. Moreover, the collision at the Canadian GP, causing Norris to suffer from a DNF, further cost him a good chunk of points.

Regardless of the on-track shenanigans, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are maximizing points for McLaren since the beginning of the year. As such, Andrea Stella applauded Norris and Piastri’s ‘very high’ quality of drive on track. Stella asserted that Woking had two drivers who had great standards, and were similar to those of world champions that the former had worked with before.

The question is about the quality of the drive. Very, very, very high quality. Like I said before, we have two drivers which, to the standards that even myself, in my career, I’ve been close to, driving with multiple world champions.

Andrea Stella emphasized that both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris were already operating on the level of F1 world champions, without even winning their first title yet. Stella further insisted that both Norris and Piastri deserved to be in contention for the driver’s title and win the title by the end of the 2025 season. However, only one of the two can win the title, as the end-of-the-season battle would definitely be extremely enticing.

I think Lando and Oscar are operating at that level, at the level of deservedly being in contention for the drivers world championship.

Oscar Piastri will have to keep up with performances and keep Lando Norris at bay if he wants to maintain his lead in the title. Norris isn’t making Piastri’s life any easier as he has set his eyes on the prize. As such, the Australian opened up on the most important factor that he must keep in mind if he seriously wants to win his maiden driver’s title this year.

Oscar Piastri pinpointed that he had a lot of confidence in himself, that he could perform well. Piastri accepted that there weren’t many race weekends where he was completely perfect, but he was used to it. Hence, putting together a solid and consistent year would be of utmost importance to him. Regardless, the 24-year-old recalled that he was very proud of his recent performances, especially the one at Spa-Francorchamps.

I think I have a lot of confidence in myself that I can do it, yes. Not every weekend has been perfect, but there’s not many weekends in my whole life that have been perfect. So I think just trying to put together a solid, consistent year is ultimately going to be an important thing. But I think the pace in the last few weekends, I think, especially Spa, I’ve been very confident in and very proud of.

McLaren has dominated a majority of the 2025 season and has run off in the distance in the constructors’ championship. For now, the intra-team battle at Woking is cooking up between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. All the upcoming races will be extremely interesting to witness as the fight at the front of the pack between the Papaya Squad will remain enticing.
