McLaren has attained the constructors’ championship lead amidst highly dominant performances in the 2024 season. Red Bull’s performance struggles further eased up Woking’s chances of leading the championship. Hence, Andrea Stella voiced his opinion over the massive feat achieved after over a decade in Formula 1.

The Azerbaijan GP was a showcase of McLaren’s impressive performance as Oscar Piastri bought home the victory. However, Andrea Stella believed that the car wasn’t fast enough to create ‘boring races’ with the race leader enjoying a huge gap in terms of distance. Stella reckoned that this wasn’t in the best interest of the sport. Regardless, the Italian pointed out that McLaren wanted the races to go this way.

Because the car is still not fast enough to create some boring races, which is not in the interests of F1 but is definitely the way we want to go racing.

Hence, Stella wanted the team to continue working on the MCL38 and make it faster. Additionally, after gaining the constructors’ championship lead, Stella reckoned that they needed to be humble. The McLaren crew had to remain grounded as there wasn’t a huge gap between the top teams.

So we have work to do to make the car faster. We need to remain humble and keep our feet on the ground because there is not much to choose between the top teams.

McLaren didn’t ‘enjoy any advantage’ at Baku despite impressive win

Oscar Piastri didn’t start the race from pole and faced stern competition throughout before achieving the victory. As a result, Andrea Stella pointed out that the McLaren chassis was fast at some circuits like Hungary, Zandvoort, etc. However, the Azerbaijan GP was one where the team didn’t have any realistic advantage over Ferrari and even Red Bull.

McLaren is the best car in some kind of circuits like Barcelona, Hungary, Zandvoort, for good technical reasons. But here [in Azerbaijan], McLaren did not enjoy any advantage over Ferrari, and I think not even over Red Bull.

The constructors championship seems to be contended by the top four teams in the 2024 season. McLaren will have to keep up with such performances in order to fend off the improving pace of Red Bull. Additionally, the Maranello-based Ferrari will attempt to clinch the championship amidst the battle between the top two teams.
