McLaren suffered from some problematic situations at the Singapore GP involving their two drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Norris made a daring move against Piastri, which caused the latter to lose the P3 position and ultimately finish in the same position. As such, the Aussie lashed out on the team radio and declared that the situation wasn’t fair to him.
Now, McLaren’s Team Principal Andrea Stella has weighed in on the matter and provided clarity on Oscar Piastri‘s heated radio comment. After Lando Norris collided with him, Piastri claimed on the team radio that it wasn’t fair for him not to get back the position. Although the team did not swap positions in the race, the Aussie was likely not delighted with how the events unfolded, and Norris’ post-race comments.
Andrea Stella acknowledged that Oscar Piastri made some comments in the heat of the moment, which he did not mean. Stella noted that, although questionable, they wanted such a character from the drivers, which would help them fight hard on track and maximize results. The Italian highlighted that the team wanted both drivers to make their positions clear and establish their ambitions.
Obviously, Oscar made some statements while he was in the car, but that’s the kind of character that we want to have from our drivers, They have to make their position very clear, that’s what we ask them.
Andrea Stella said, as reported by RacingNews365.
Further, Andrea Stella reckoned that McLaren needed to put things into perspective for an F1 driver and how intense such racing moments were, and Oscar Piastri’s comments weren’t completely unwarranted. Stella highlighted that for Piastri, he believed that Norris turned into him on Lap 1, which wasn’t the case, as the latter collided with Max Verstappen and had to turn in.
At the same time, we have to put things in perspective – the perspective of a driver that is in a Formula 1 car with the intensity of it being the first lap, and the perspective that obviously just saw Lando moving onto him, but we know that Lando in reality had a contact with Verstappen and oversteered into Oscar.
Andrea Stella added.
Andrea Stella clears any ‘ill intent’ from Lando Norris against Oscar Piastri
Oscar Piastri must have believed in the heat of the moment that Lando Norris turned into him purposefully to gain the P3 position. Although Lando Norris ruled out the accident as anything more than a racing incident, Piastri was still displeased with the entire matter. Now, Andrea Stella sided with the Briton and cleared his side of the story.

Andrea Stella pointed out that the first lap situation between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris was something that could happen due to close racing. As such, Norris’ incident was nothing short of a racing incident. Still, Stella assured that McLaren would review the situation together and have a good conversation on the matter to prevent such issues henceforth.
The first-lap situation is one of those that can happen with this close racing, We will review the situation together with our drivers, we will have the good conversations like we had, for instance, after Canada.
Andrea Stella noted.
McLaren has already achieved the constructors’ title win and will now relax on that matter for now. The driver’s title is still far from over, and Lando Norris is just 22 points adrift of the lead. Now, the final six races are certainly going to be extremely exciting and interesting, especially between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
