Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton announced a shock move to Ferrari in 2025 at the the start of this season. Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes comes after 12 glorious years with the team in which he amassed six world championships.

Mercedes, despite picking up the pace this year, has not been a palpable threat to the championship title since 2021. The Silver Arrows have won only four races in the past three years and have looked a bit powerless against Red Bull.

Mercedes trackside engineer Andrew Shovlin thereafter clarified the reason, that in his opinion, was behind Lewis Hamilton‘s decision to join Ferrari. Shovlin stated that the 39-year-old made the move in hopes of writing a fresh chapter with the Maranello-based outfit during the twilight period of his career.

I think his biggest reasons are not necessarily ones of car performance. He clearly wants to have another chapter in his career beyond his very successful one with Mercedes. He's of an age where if he was going to do that, he would need to do it sooner rather than later.
Andrew Shovlin told select media including RacingNews365

Hamilton has also, on many occasions, spoken of his dream to drive for Ferrari at least once in his career. He will therefore look forward to racing in red overalls in 2025, hoping to win more races and at least another championship in the coming years.

Mercedes pinpoints key reason for the W15’s resurgence

Mercedes has caught up to the pace of McLaren and Red Bull in the past few races this season. The Silver Arrows have amassed a staggering 170 points over the last six races and have been victorious on three occasions.

One of the areas that we’ve improved with the car is being able to land the setup in FP1. That’s a good foundation to start building on performance and fine-tuning it that helps your weekend enormously.  In the early part of the year, we were making relatively small changes and suddenly the whole car balance left us and we were really struggling.

Andrew Shovlin claimed that the team has gotten to grips with perfecting the W15’s setup as early as FP1 on race weekends. Shovlin also stated that the Brackley-based team initially faltered in making stable changes while maintaining balance, which was a major reason for their upsetting runs.

The W15 has since shown stability over a varying range of tracks and conditions since their upgrades at Montreal. The Toto Wolff-led outfit will now look to build on their upward trajectory with hopes of compensating for the points lost at the start of 2024.
