Aston Martin was the closest challenger to Red Bull at the start of the 2023 F1 season. However, this soon changed as the AMR23 lost pace in comparison to rivals, a trend that has continued into the ongoing campaign. Witnessing the team’s low morale, Mike Krack asserted that the team would bounce back through the slump, though its star driver Fernando Alonso has found it hard to cling onto the fringes of the top 10 lately.

Fernando Alonso debuted in 2001 and soon became a double world champion. On the contrary, the Spaniard is famous for his poorly-timed career moves. While the Aston Martin move earlier seemed like a no-brainer, he proved his critics wrong. However, this has now come back to bite him as the AMR24 has dropped like a stone in a puddle amid the competitive midfield causing the former world champion to race for minor points-paying positions.

While this performance slump disappointed the Spanish driver after the Belgian GP. On the other hand, his team principal, Mike Krack, remained optimistic as he claimed to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

From an engineering point of view, I can see the light. I am confident in our engineering, in our performance development, in our aerodynamic development… We are on the right track and we will have a better second half of the season. I am not normally so bold with statements, but we know what we have.
Mike Krack said in an interview with Aston Martin

The Luxembourg-born asserted that he has full faith in his team’s staff. Moreover, he reckoned that Aston Martin was on the right path despite multiple failed upgrades and retained a positive outlook towards the team becoming a serious challenger after the summer break.

Alonso is also known as a never-quitter in the F1 world owing to his stint at McLaren. The Spaniard has experience of driving inferior machinery in the past but has showcased his persistence throughout his career. Subsequently, after the race in Belgium, though he was disappointed, he envisioned a better second half of the season.

Alonso is often known for his sarcastic replies, but the Spaniard showcased the seriousness of the problem as he asserted that the team needs to do a lot of work ahead of the summer break.

The double world champion admitted that the Silverstone-based engineers had a lot of work to do. But displayed the team’s perseverance as he claimed the team would not give up.

So there’s definitely a lot of work to do for us in summer break and the second part of the year. We will not give up, but we need to work.
Fernando Alonso said in an interview with PlanetF1

The double world champion admitted that the Silverstone-based engineers had a lot of work to do to catch up to the manufacturers that have leapfrogged them. However, amidst his rant, he also displayed the team’s perseverance as he claimed the team would not give up and aim for higher results heading into the second part of the season.

Despite Alonso’s optimism, Aston Martin currently trails Mercedes for an astonishing 193 points in the interim standings. Thus, the team has a long way to go before they catch up to the top four manufacturers in F1.
