Every iteration of the Azerbaijan GP had been a banger among fans, and this year’s race was no different. The race was full of clean fighting with no driver crossing the line. However, this changed on the penultimate lap as Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez came together dramatically. The crash left Perez infuriated as he deemed the Spaniard ‘crazy’ for the sudden clash.
Carlos Sainz lost out on the benefit of starting third to Sergio Perez when the lights went out. The 30-year-old was a considerable way off from Charles Leclerc‘s pace and was predicted to finish fourth. On the contrary, towards the tail end of the race, he started making inroads on the top three. Subsequently, he appeared as a threat for getting the last spot on the podium, which was under Perez’s control.
With Leclerc slowing down, the 34-year-old got into Sainz’s firing zone. This aided the Spaniard to swiftly pass him but remained in close proximity to each other. However, the tight gap came to bite them as both drivers collided with each other, causing their races to end early.
What the f**k. Is he crazy or what?Sergio Perez said over the radio
Subsequently, the Red Bull driver shared anger-charged messages with his Spanish-speaking counterpart after the crash. He deemed Sainz to be responsible for the incident while claiming the Spaniard’s actions as crazy.
Carlos Sainz and Sergio Perez’s eagerness on the throttle cost them a podium
While Sainz’s race had been uneventful for the most part, he had been driving a solid race on his end. On the other hand, Perez was eager to prove his worth to the grid after questions were raised against him mid-season on his driving capability.
Moreover, both drivers wanted to get more from the Baku race and it came to bite them, as Fred Vasseur explained.
First of all, he [Carlos] is okay - a retirement is a bit steep, but he is okay, which is the most important. Then I think they started straight line between turn 2 and 3 of Charles and they were very, very close together.Fred Vassuer said post-race
The Frenchman elaborated that both drivers were in the slipstream range of Leclerc. This caused them to move towards the hole in the air that the Monegasque had created to gain straight-line speed. This, in turn, caused them to fight for the same piece of tarmac which ended their races a lap earlier than expected.
Despite the massive clash, Ferrari still gained eight points on Red Bull in the constructor’s standings. Thus, the Austrian giant risks losing the runners-up spot to the Scuderia if they don’t find a resolution to their problems soon.
